  1. The following arrived in my mail anonymously today. I wish I'd writen
it. It doesn't have anything to do with medicine per se, but it
contains so many of the same liberal, witch-hunting, whiney
    "blame-humans and Americans-in-particular for all life's problems"
outlook on life, common to some of our paranoid posters, that it's
actually quite relevent to most of the discussions we've recently seen
on this newsgroup. Enjoy. I think you'll recognize the tone
    immediately.

How D-Day Would be Reported by Today's Press

    NORMANDY, FRANCE (June 6, 1944)

Three hundred French civilians were killed and thousands more were
wounded today in the first hours of America's invasion of continental
    Europe.
Casualties were heaviest among women and children.

Most of the French casualties were the result of artillery fire from
American ships attempting to knock out German fortifications prior to
    the
landing of hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops.

Reports from a makeshift hospital in the French town of St. Mere Eglise
said the carnage was far worse than the French had anticipated, and
that reaction against the American invasion was running high.

"We are dying for no reason, "said a Frenchman speaking on condition of
anonymity. "Americans can't even shoot straight. I never thought I'd
say this, but life was better under Adolph [censored]."

The invasion also caused severe environmental damage. American troops,
tanks, trucks and machinery destroyed miles of pristine shoreline and
thousands of acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands.

It was believed that the habitat of the spineless French crab was
completely wiped out, thus threatening the species with extinction.

A representative of Greenpeace said his organization, which had tried
to stall the invasion for over a year, was appalled at the destruction,
but not surprised. "This is just another example of how the military
destroys the environment without a second thought," said Christine
Moanmore. "And it's all about corporate greed."

Contacted at his Manhattan condo, a member of the French
government-in-exile who abandoned Paris when [censored] invaded, said the
invasion was based solely on American financial interests.

"Everyone knows that President Roosevelt has ties to 'big beer,'" said
Pierre LeWimp. "Once the German beer industry is conquered, Roosevelt's
beer cronies will control the world market and make a fortune."

Administration supporters said America's aggressive actions were based
in part on the assertions of controversial scientist Albert Einstein,
    who sent
a letter to Roosevelt speculating that the Germans were developing a
    secret weapon -- a so-alled "atomic bomb."

Such a weapon could produce casualties on a scale never seen before,
and cause environmental damage that could last for thousands of years.

[censored] has denied having such a weapon and international inspectors
were unable to locate such weapons even after spending two long
    weekends in
    Germany.

Shortly after the invasion began, reports surfaced that German
prisoners had been abused by American soldiers. Mistreatment of Jews by
    Germans at
their so-called "concentration camps" has been rumored, but so far this
    remains unproven.

Several thousand Americans died during the first hours of the invasion,
and French officials are concerned that the uncollected corpses will
    pose a
    public-health risk.

"The Americans should have planned for this in advance," they said.
"It's their mess, and we don't intend to help clean it up."

Aren't you the guy ( or is it someone else?) who delights in accusing
posters of being "off topic"? I'm no liberal but believe that the Bush
people are a hundred times worse than the liberals. I don't see the
Bush people as true conservatives anyway. I enjoy your excellent
contributions to this newsgroup but would appreciate it if you could
move your political comments to a more appropriate newsgroup. Thanks!

    COMMENT
No, it's actually somebody else who's fanatic about on-topic posting.
You can accuse me here of rule-bending, but not hypocrisy.

I thought I explained why I thought this was relevent. It showcases a
certain attitude that infects all of life, including thinking about
health and medicine. And one which shows up in health groups in about
    every third or fourth message.

It also sums up my feelings about professional journalists rather well.
Journalism is that profession whose business it is to explain that
which it personally does not understand. That's okay-- that's an
impossible task and nobody expects journalists to know everything. My
problem with journalists is that they don't use the fact-correcting
mechanisms of scientific publishing (which includes proofing by those
who know the substance of the subject in question). My worst problem
after that is with journalists who are basically harpies--- the ones
who are just plain nasty. They love dirty laundry, and they love to
play up the negative side of anything and everything. They've learned
that this is what gets their product sold.

The Normandy Invasion on D-Day had a negative side. This cute little
parody is how that story would have been written had the negative side
been played up, as is routine in news articles today. Similarly, there
are few technolgies without negative sides, but journalists are
incapable of seeing things in balance. There is no technology they
don't benefit from, but I see journalists backbite technology all the
time. Of course, in general, they do not understand technology. Show me
a journalist who can handle the simplest calculus, or has any idea what
the structure of a protein is. Except for a few specialists hired by
large institutions like the New York Times for their special sections,
you won't find them. Journalists are people of the word, and most of
them don't realy believe in the usefullness or the goodness, of
anything else but talk. Unfortunately, that's what we also know as
"magical thinking." The word "spell" simply means "story." People of
the Story, who really think they have a primary grip on reality, are a
scary bunch. They include preachers, politicians, flackmen, ad-men and
of course, lawyers. Mankind has been plagued with them for a very long
time. It is well to recognize them when they appear, and beware.

  4. Whiney Conservative Reporting --
It's hard work and we aren't going to do anything different but this
time it will work. Just be patient, how about we scare DC again with
another false alarm. No Post-speech bump? I'll start Yelling about
Iran, now maybe that will drive my numbers up! No? Well I'll be able
to reverse Row/Wade with 2 new justices!

Ha, Ha got ya there! Snicker, Snicker

Yeah, the conservatives are always whining about something.

    1. They're whining about women having reproductive choice.
    2. They're whining about homosexual couples getting marriage
    certificates.
    3. They're whining about government giving aid to India
to reduce AIDS by dispensing condoms to prostitutes.
    4. They're whining about government imposing limits on how
much corporations can pollute our environment.
    5. They're whining that if we try to reduce global warming
and air pollution, we'll wreck the economy.
    6. They're whining that Bush only got 96% of his judicial
    nominations confirmed.
    7. They're whining that not enough suckers are enlisting in
    in the armed services.
    8. They whining that our government is too secular (not
    Christian enough).
    9. They're whining about their taxes (no matter how rich
    they are).
    10. They're whining that we can't drill for oil in the Arctic
    National Wildlife Refuge.
    11. They're whining that the Corporate Average Fuel
Economy imposed on automakers is too strict (when
    it's really way too lax).

Please add to my list, you "whiney conservatives".

    13. They whine that some terminally ill people suffering excruciating
