I probably wouldn't buy used shorts, not because someone has worn them, but lycra tends to wear thin rather quickly and you wouldn't really be able to see this in a photo on ebay.

C'mon steelem, tell us the truth - how many pairs of second-hand bib shorts have you bid for and won and do you sniff them all everyday or do you ration yourself to one sniff of one pair a day? You can tell us, because you're among people here who I'm sure sympathise with guys like yourself who have brain damage.

I'm with steelem on this one. I know they can be washed and that yes, they are clean.... but there's something about it that just isn't right. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't wear someone else's cycling shorts. And I definitely wouldn'tpay for the privilege. Ewww.

Nobody in their right mind would wear used cycling shorts, which probably means there are a few people out there not in their right mind.

In light of his posting history, it is not unreasonable to infer that steelem was more interested in attacking others for something he does not agree with, for which there are varied and valid opinions.

As for the original question, I think I am in the minority in thinking that used bib shorts are not a problem if a fair price has been paid for them (i.e. much less than retail). The proviso is that you know how to wash your clothes.

Underwear is an unrealistic comparison, because a good pair of daks doesn't cost upwards of $250 cf. good bibs.

There is something wrong about it. The thought of it is weird. I agree with Steelem.

I have this mental picture of opening the UPS box, finding a pair of slightly used ASSOS bib shorts carefully packaged with skid marks on the pad.

I beg to differ here.

A good pair of bibs may cost anywhere between A$200-A$400. At 50% off for a lightly used pair, that's a saving of $100-200.

A pair of good quality daks OTOH, is somewhere between $5 - $10 new. A cheap pair maybe $2. So that being the case, there's little economic reason to be thrifty about underwear unless you're really struggling for cash.

Hypothetically, if I was trying really hard to save, then I'd consider buying used daks if it meant that I could save a significant amount of money. With such a low unit cost like that, any such saving is likely to be insignificant.

And besides, when was the last time you saw somebody selling used underwear? There's no market for it because:
a) people don't buy it, and
b) people don't get enough of a return out of it to justify trying to sell it.

Rationally, there's a no good economic reason to not buy a used pair of bibs. And if you clean it, wash it, and disinfect it (if you must), then I can't think of a rational hygienic reason to not wear them.

What's holding you guys against it is an irrational (and dare I say it, juvenile) fear of something having brushed up against somebody else's goolies. 😄

And if that's important to you, then keep buying new - there's nothing stopping you.

+1. If it bothers you, don't buy them. If it doesn't bother you, buy them if you want them. Its as simple as that🙄 . It bothers me so I don't buy them!

Pretty much. I know our washer has a sanitary cycle on it, so I guess iffin' a person was so inclined they could run their new used bibs through said cycle. Not me, though.

I have sold three pairs of used shorts (Pearl Izumi [censored]) on eBay, and I was amazed how much people paid for 'em.

eBay IS a great place to get new Assos stuff at a lower price.

I grew up on clothes from a Salvation Army thrift shop. Mom simply could not afford to clothe 3 boys with new things.

But that all stopped in my teens when I started working and buying my own clothes.

This isn't a sanitary debate. Wash the clothes and wear away. It's a money issue. If you have the money then wearing used clothes will seem beneath you. No money and the problem eases.

All that said; even mom bought new underwear for us. I don't want to know how poor you have to be to require that. :eek:
