    It appears to be a type of cush-drive. That suggests it protects the
    drive train from impulses in the driving forces. It might have some
    advantages for somebody whose pedalling style involves stamping on the
    pedals a lot. Using toe-clips or SPDs would seem a more obvious
    solution, though.

    On the other hand, the impulses might be generated at the wheels, not
    the pedals. Perhaps it's rather good for riding up and down flights of
    stairs.

    This is all speculation. It looks nicely made, whatever it's meant to do.

    No more than to any other cyclist. Possibly less, because at least the
    BMX crowd need very precise control over torque. This would be of
    benefit to mashers - people who cannot spin - because the springs will
    absorb energy as the cranks are horizontalish - on the downstrokes -
    and return it when the cranks are verticalish, thus smoothing out power
    delivery. Of course, it's cheaper and more efficient to learn to spin.

    I suspect the idea is to return the pedal effort on the down stroke to
    help through the bottom part of the stroke. Sort of a high tech
    biopace. Guess it could also have some use in off-roading is isolating
    some of the shocks coming through the cranks that can sometimes bounce
    you out of clipless even.

    Probably won't work but I've no problem with someone trying it out.

    the pressure eases? A variant on the principle behind those elliptical
    chainrings, working on actual rather than theoretical variability of
    pressure in the cycle?

    More efficient is debatable but still I get the point.

    But "rounder"? How can it make your pedalling action "rounder"? Do

    Maybe so the effort put in at any point of the pedal stroke follows a
    smoother curve. With conventional cranks there's a spike at the top and
    bottom (without being clipped in and pushing laterally as well as down
    it's more or less a discontinuity).

    However, strikes me as a solution in need of a real problem...

    How can it possibly increase the power? It takes energy to compress the
    springs, the springs then return less than 100 percent of that energy -
    therefore it can only consume power, not increase it.

    Actually, those are supposed to be "not too bad"! The front wheel drive
    is geared down slightly from the rear with a freewheel so the front only
    engages when the rear slips. Possibly of some use when climbing steep
    slippery slopes off-road, or riding on ice.

    I prefer the 3x3 trike that appeared in Velovision a short while ago.
    Undoubtedly heavy, but a cool bit of kit.

    You've still got friction losses in the transmission system, thoughbut.
    It's fundamentally a flexible cable drive like some dentists drills,
    and will have some degree of transmission windup, too.

    Potentially more interesting is the hydraulic drive bikes various people
    play with every now and again. Sooner or later someone will make one
    work, and that should give you two wheel drive with continuously
    variable ratios and without, I would have thought, excessive drag.
