    But why?

The main purpose of the chamois is to keep your shorts from bunching up and
chafing when you ride. The padding feature is secondary. Some shorts have
little or no padding; just the chamois.

  2. The chamois moves with your body the seat doesn't. So the chamois takes the
friction of sliding around on the seat instead of your butt. Same as runners
that tape toes, wear extra socks etc. They don't just get thicker insoles.

Our XC coach used to have us spray our feet with TuffSkin and then
roll on a pair of thin nylon socks, before we'd put on our one or two
pair of 80% wool calf-lengths (and our Tigers) and go out for 10k.

When I started running 2 to 4 times that distance, I went back to Dr.
Scholls' powder and one pair of 50/50 socks, and never got a blister.

That said, I'd never consider a decent length (80 km +) bike ride
without a pair of clean, dry chamois shorts. Some things are not worth
    risking blisters on.

And badger balm or similar, too, in fact. Great stuff, both pro- and
    re-actively.

Saddle padding rubs you like the saddle does.

Chamois in your shorts mostly sticks to you and rubs the
saddle through your slippery spandexed ass.

It still rubs you, but a lot less.

I say just pad your a$$.
