Tyler Hamilton, Aimee Vasse win Mount Washington bike race

    The Associated Press

Olympic gold medalist Tyler Hamilton, who's been suspended from
sanctioned races for the past two years, returned to the White
Mountains Saturday to win the only race he has been free to ride - the
7.6-mile Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb.

Grosse Point, Mich.-native Aimee Vasse won for the women, coming in at
1:08:31 to place 22nd overall in a field of almost 600 riders.
Hamilton's time was 52:21. His suspension over a blood doping offense
ends Sept. 22, just in time for the World Cycling Championships on
    Sept. 24.

For Hamilton, of Marblehead, Mass., the race was a time trial, for
    Vasse a tactical contest.

"I went as hard as I could from the bottom of the hill," Hamilton said.

Riders faced wet conditions, with a sudden rainsquall at the start, wet
fog on the upper slopes, and a 20-mph wind.

Hamilton's closest pursuer was 51-year-old former world mountain bike
champion Ned Overend of Durango, Colo., who placed fourth here in 2005.
Overend finished in 54:41. Third place went to Ian Ayers, of Atlantic
Highlands, N.J., who was making his fifth, and best, appearance here.

For the women, Vasse won by overtaking two extremely strong
challengers, Marti Shea of Marblehead, Mass., and Sue Schlatter of
Ottawa, Ontario. Both rode ahead of Vasse in the early miles below the
mountain's treeline, but as Vasse said afterward, "I knew I had to save
something for the end. The key was the win, not the time."

Schlatter arrived just six seconds behind Vasse, clocking a 1:08:37 and
placing 24th overall. Shea was by herself in third at 1:11:40.

Damn! Hamilton is in his early 30s and Overend is only slower than him by 2
minutes and change? Ned is a machine.

Yeah, but Tyler was warned about competing in non USCF races in
Colorado about a year ago...Or at least the race promoters were warned.

I think 2-year ban means: 2-year ban. Sanctioned or non-sanctioned.
By participating in a non-sanctioned event, that means he is thumbing
his nose at the UCI's authority over him. So then let him compete
solely at the non-sanctioned level from now on. Problem solved.

their riders competing against riders who had been "banned."

This stuff can degenerate very rapidly into bogus "ownership of the
sport" peeing matches that serve no benefit for anyone. Ask Les Earnest.

That said, bans are bans. If I was a racing organization, I would tend
to default to respecting bans from other sanctioning bodies except on a
case-by-case basis. Wouldn't that be nice: then you could fight your ban
across the country, one independent sanctioning body at a time.

On second thought, forget I ever said this,

There's a guy here (in Belgium) who got a life ban from the Flemish
cycling federation, so he tried to race in Wallonia instead, but I
think they frowned upon him as well. So he does non-sanctioned mountain
bike races I think. I guess the other competitors (not just the
promoters) in such events should have a say on whether banned-for-life
    dopers should be allowed in.

Also, it was with a slight sense of irony that I noted what he was
wearing the other day when I saw him out training: the full ProTour
    leader's jersey and shorts.

That's just it...Hamilton is a licensed rider. He might be under
suspension, but he is still supposed to be honoring the terms of his
suspension. I think that would especially include not competing in a
non UCI-affiliated organization's events. The message sent to Hamilton
should be along the lines of "Don't want to respect your suspension?
Then go ahead and remain non-sanctioned for good".

Besides admonishing USCF riders at the events in CO, USAC also
admonished Hamilton for not honoring the spirit of his suspension.

Actually it was the UCI that asked USA Cycling to send a message to
riders who hold an international license to remind them about the
possible sanctions against riders who ride in unsanctioned events.

I believe the UCI rule is that riders holding an international license
can't ride in events that aren't approved by the country's governing
body. For the regional groups like ACA and OBRA USAC give approval to
those events so people with an international license can do them
without having to worry about UCI suspension.
