  1. Yippee! We've taken an executive decision (ha ;-) to go for the course
run by the man who was recommended to Steve O, Stuart Johnston. The
    website is here:

    http://climbmts.co.uk/

The people who've expressed an interest are as follows.

    Judith
    Darren
    (Sarah) (maybe)
    Andy Howell
    Richard G
    Chris Malcolm
    Roger C. (maybe)
    Peewiglet

Now all we need to do is make a final decision re: the dates.

All but Richard can do 18-20 February, so it seems to me that unless
we can all do an earlier one then we'd best stick with that one.
However, the course people can do the other, earlier two weekends in
February too, so we just need to find out whether we could all do
    either of those.

It can be difficult tying up the final ends on something like this, so
I vote that if we've not been able to settle on one of the earlier
ones by close of play on Friday then we should just go with the 18-20
    February one.

I'll ring the course place today to tell them we're going with them,
and that we'll get back to them asap with final dates.

So, can you do either of these earlier weekends?

    4-6 February
    11-13 February

    Best wishes,

    Both. No preference.

Can do both and the 18/20th. (Out of those three weekends, my *least*
favourite is the 11-13 but it's not important).

Thanks for making an executive decision!

A quick e-mail to wish everyone well for this course (I can't make
it, as all the dates fall within Full Term). I went on a winter walking
course a few years back in Glencoe (with a company that sadly no longer
offers them). I learned an enormous amount, walked to places and in
circumstances I thought I'd never do, and enjoyed myself immensely.
Please post a TR when you return from the course!

at a push I might be able to do these, but it will be a struggle. I've
also just twigged that 18-20th is the end of half term week - this
shouldn't be a problem, but I will need to do some grovelling in the
    morning!!

AAMOI, do you know what time the finish is on Sunday - just thinking of
    travelling back etc.

I can make any dates, keep me in as they change. I'll object if dates
become impossible, which is most unlikely.

    Hi again,

I'm not sure how reliable my newsfeed (Claranews) is at the moment,
but I've only seen replies from Judith, Darren and Chris (other than
Mark, who was simply posting to wish us all a good time).

It sounds as though the 18-20th weekend suits those who replied with a
preference better than the other w/ends, and it also suited Andy and
Roger. Are we agreed that we should stick with that one, then?

If so, we'll need to ring/email individually to confirm places. I'd
like to send them an email now (the address and phone number are on
their webpage at http://climbmts.co.uk/) to say we'll definitely be
going, but I can't really do that for y'all. So, can those who are
going please email Stuart and post here to confirm it's done.
Otherwise we may presumably lose the place.

If it's possible, can people just drop a quick note here to confirm
their intentions and that they've written to Stuart, just so we know
    where we're up to?

I'm just about to go out (2nd Xmas party of the day) (late already)
and will be back briefly tomorrow morning (Saturday) but am then going
out until around 9 or 10pm Saturday night ..... so I'll do all my
emailing and confirming on Saturday night.

Thanks for all your organising, PW.

I think the numbers have grown somewhat. Are you sure he will be able to
take all of us? I don't want to book early and then find I have denied
    someone else a place.

The other thing that has crossed my mind is that we all want to be
together (I presume) and if we book absolutely independently there might
be some chance of us ending up on different courses and differing
    accommodation.

FWIW I think that date at least has a better chance of good snow which
might be lacking earlier in the season and there will also be a
reasonable amount of daylight by then.

    Thinks, telephone:

"Hello, I want to join Peewiglets expedition on ..."

    "Who? Shirley you jest!"

I think it's ok. I rang y/day to see whether they could go up to 8, if
necessary, and I was told they can: that's the number they generally
    work on.

The names I've got as having expressed an interest are:

    Judith
    Darren
    (Sarah) (maybe)
    Andy Howell
    Chris Malcolm
    Roger C.
    Peewiglet

There was Richard G, but sadly he can't do this w/e, and unfortunately
Steve O can't come either. That leaves 7, according to my reckoning,
assuming that Sarah is able to make it.

Has anyone else put his/her name down? Claranet has been acting a
little oddly this week: things have arrived apparently out of
sequence, and I'm not 100% confident that I've had everything. Did you
    think there were more?

Hopefully not - I've been in email and telephone contact with someone
called Ishbeal, who I think must be Stuart's partner, and we've been
discussing booking this weekend just for us. So, when ringing, just
tell her it's the weekend that Shirley has spoken to her about. (I
don't give out my real name over the telephone, you understand... ;-)

    So, contact details there are:

    tel: 01738 828 205
    Speak to Ishbeal or Stuart
    Mention me (code name: Shirley...)

    THE DEAL IS:
    18th-20th February.
£100 each for course: to be paid on booking.
£15 each per night for accommodation, to be paid later (if desired).
    ------
    £130 each

    Optional extras:
£20 each (approximately) for kit hire (if necessary).
£18 each (approximately) for insurance, if desired: just ask on
    booking.

For that weekend, accommodation will be Adventurers Escaper Bunkhouse,
    Weem.

Those going: please ring and book and post here to say you've done it,
or we may lose out on the chance to make igloos and bury someone in

I did indeed think there were more but going back through the threads
the only other I can find is Chris Street who could only come on this
particular weekend and not the earlier ones. That only makes 8 anyway. I
think I must have overlooked that some had had to withdraw.

  15. I very nearly booked a provisional place yesterday but over night I got
cold feet. I have concluded with considerable reluctance that with my
recent (and not so recent|) history of knee trouble in winter conditions
I would be foolish indeed to seek out a weekend in which my troublesome
knee would have ample opportunity to misbehave. I did very little in the
first 6 months of this year as a result of knee trouble brought on by no
    more than a cold wind.

ISTM that there are more than enough to make the course viable but
should the numbers shrink alarmingly I could always step in at the last
moment to make the numbers up. As is often said (of other activities
usually) there is no fool like an old fool.

Have fun and don't forget the TRs.

Thanks. It will depend on how foolish I am feeling and how my knee has
coped with the winter up to then. 10 years ago I gave up hill walking
almost completely for several years mainly on account of winter knee
trouble that wouldn't go away over the Summer. In 2 of the last 3
winters it has come back to haunt me and that without tumbling headfirst
down a snow slope to practice ice axe braking.

OTOH that nice Mr Brown has apparently decided to return £200 that he
had previously extracted from my hard earned pension. I understand I
should spend it on keeping warm so it will be either a case of whisky or
a flog up some suitably steep hillsides. :-)

Curious, do you believe that your knee condition is brought on by colder
temperatures, OR, the extra rigours you put your knee through while winter
mountaineering, i.e. short daylight hours (limited rest), heavier pack,
tougher going,. use of crampons etc!
