Workstands

After suffering a stiff back from last evenings gear fettling I think I
need to invest in a workstand.

I'm looking to spend £50-£70 on a workstand.

I have seen these:

I have recently fitted a Tusk hook on my garage wall for storage of a
bike. It is useful, perhaps not as good as a work stand, I wouldn't know
as I've never used one, for gear fettling.

I went on about this a week or two ago - what I didn't like about it is
that it supports the bike by the bottom bracket shell, and clamps it by
the downtube. If (like me) you have a bike whose gear cables go round
the BB shell by way of the downtube, you may (like me) find that
irritating.

I see from Wiggle that the Minoura RS-1200 has "a unique BB shell adaptor
for compatibility with bicycles that have bottom bracket routed cables"
which may work well, or may not.

I stumbled across this DIY version. Has anyone built one? Would it be
worth it?

The Veloman looks best to me, maybe because it's a variation on the Minoura

From the description below, it looks like you wanted to link to the
Minoura RS5000. I use one of those (UKP 100 off from the LBS too!), and
it's a very good stand.

Agreed. It's definitely the most flexible way to hold a bike up for
working on, makes scrubbing out bottom backets much easier, and gear
adjustments become a matter of a few minutes. Also, stands like that
are what you'll see in proper bike shops too, if that's a good guide.

The downside is that a single clamp design has to be fairly well made or
it'll all go sideways fairly quickly. If the Velomann's build quality is
up to par, then I'd recommend going with that. Does anyone out there use
this stand?

If you have a few more notes handy, I'd suggest going for the RS5000.
Well-manufactured stands will last for much the same reason that
well-made bikes last, given good enough care and attention - lubricate
pivots, keep clean etc.
