Favoring language is reality right now. In the U.S., you
will not amount to much if you don't speak English. Forcing
illiteracy on those who do not yet speak English seems sort
of mean-spirited. It's a non-issue. Besides, with the NAFTA
in effect most everything has three languages written on it
anyway. What's the big deal?

Actually, he went to Andover in Massachusetts for prep
school instead of public high school in Texas. Then there
were the frequent family summer vacations in Conneticut
at the "Bush compound". He also spent some time as a
child in the DC area. Not that long, but a few months I
believe. One other thing- the UT law school recognized
his dismal performance at Yale for what it was and
rejected him; Harvard accepted him for their MBA program,
which probably says something about where the family had
more pull at the time.

(Whatever history you use, Bush was not in the TANG
continuously from 68-73.)

Of course, most of you know that the purchase of the
Crawford ranch came in the late 90s as a prop in
anticipation of his run for president. It has no
connection at all before that to the short history of the
Bush family in Texas.

As a 6th generation Texan myself, I think that Bush has some
characteristics that are Texan and not just affectations,
but I also think that there is a tendency to attribute
incorrectly some aspects of his personality to his Texas
background. For instance, his twisted speech patterns are
portrayed as folksy, but they clearly are inherited or
learned from George Sr; the Texas part is his accent, but
the syntax mixes Texas dialect with Bush dyslexia. And while
there may be a general Texan tendency toward macho swagger,
Bush's propensity for revenge and meanness toward people who
cross him is a characteristic that I would tend to attribute
to former and current residents of Huntsville Prison rather
than Texans in general.

Overall, I think whether Bush came from Texas or Connecticut
is less important than the fact that he has had a lifetime
of privilege and underachievement until he was tagged to run
for governor of Texas (which is not to say that he has had a
great record since then, either) and it is important to
understand, that for people who think he is a regular guy,
he's about as regular as the Duke of Gloucester and has just
about as much in common with them. He made a mess of things
in Texas and now he has done it to the country as a whole.
The ultimate question is whether as a person someone uses
their privilege to strive for something higher or merely to
increase further their privilege and escape responsibility
for their personal behavior.

As a Texan who recognizes our populist tradition, I am
disgusted that my fellow Texans have allowed the Bush family
to come in and basically set themselves up as the royal
family of Texas, plundering the state for whatever they can
get while doing nothing for the great majority of the
population.

It was a nice time trial, but I'm a little disgusted with a
race strategy that is ready to concede a 9+ minute deficit
on gc. It's not sporting and it's insulting to the
competitors. It would serve Armstrong and Ullrich and the
other heavyweigts right if one of these guys pulled it off.
Since Voeckler is just 25 there is no way that they can
really know what level he might reach, because he is at an
age where he theoretically could make a dramatic improvement
in ability at any time. It would be one thing to let them
win at +5 min but to allow +12 just makes the whole thing a
farce. If Armstrong loses because of it (and of course he
probably won't) it will go down as the all time stupid move
in the history of bike racing; if he wins it just makes the
first week and a half of the race meaningless. They might as
well just have 10 days worth of training parades through the
Belgian and French countryside and then start the Tour de
France in the Pyrenees and have it last for one week or so.
Wait- I guess that's what they *are* doing. Like I said,
today wasn't a race (except for the five guys in front), it
was a farce.

I find it amusing that Michael Savage found it necessary to
change his name from "Weiner." Perhaps he felt his target
demographic wouldn't respond positively to that name. He
should resume using it, like Hillary Rodham Clinton - I
think "Michael Savage Weiner" has kind of a nice ring to it.
