Three things. Firts, don't Blame SRAM. At the wholesale end there has
been a 5 USD increase in price from 2004 to 2005. So SRAM is not the
one gouging. Second, the MSRP for 2004 was 105 USD, for 2005 the MSRP
is 110 USD. Which brings us to ... Third, the 2004's that are selling
for ~55 USD are selling for less than original wholesale. A great deal
for bargin hunters.

since the mining and smelting of Bauxite, and the production of alumina
are extremely energy consumptive. If anything, blame the US for the
greater costs of aluminium, since we are, per capita, the greatest
consumers of energy in the world.

Exactly. The Chinese are starting to be consumer of resources that
Americans like to waste. China has a bigger population so the demand will
be bigger.

Just wait till you see gas prices this year. Unfortunately probably not
enough to deter our appetite for gas guzzling SUVs.

consumers of energy in the world.

I've been seeing metal prices (steel and Al) going nuts. Many of my
machine shops haven't even been able to find certain types of Al or in the
right size. I'm not sure what's driving it: Mills slowed down during the
recession and depleted a lot of their stock. And I'm sure some companies
are taking advantage of the current demands with absurd prices.

China has been responsible for much of the steel price increases. I don't
think this will slow down for at least a couple years. Fortunately, the
company I work sells stuff to China, so we can recovery some of that cost.

I don't know, but something is going to bust soon... Airbus and Boeing
won't stand for this BS much longer.
