What sort of job, and did you apply for it or were you cold-called? Basically, are you working now,
and if so is this job worth leaving your current one for? If you're not working now, you've got nowt
to lose. Is this job one that would suit you, and more importantly, do you want it? If you're
ambivalent, what would make it more attractive? Is it negotiable?

Wanna bet? When I took a job as an IT technician in a school a few years ago, I actually ended up
worse off than when I was on the dole. When I subtracted my dole money plus housing benefit plus the
cost of petrol to drive to work each week, I ended up £10 a week worse off. And they wonder why
people don't want to take low paid jobs! (I was duped by the pro-rata thingy.)

Come on Fran, let's get to the bottom line here, would it allow Ian to work in desirable locations

That's one of the reasons I asked about the nature of the job. At the end of the day we can't make
Ian's decision for him and he'd be mad to take any advice from us that goes against his gut
reaction. Being a YHA warden provides plenty of free time; an office job might not. Ian, why don't
you post to uk.rec.youth-hostel with a few more details (but NOT specifics)?

Good idea. Thanks. Didn't know that ng existed. I should have known there would be one. Basicaly
I'm out of work and IT is a dead industry right now. So, being rather bored, I volunteered my
services to the YHA doing whatever they wanted me to do for nnn hours a week and they immediately
offered me a job.

I know someone who worked for the YHA in various capacities. She enjoyed it a lot and used it as a
means to move from one area to another. Last I heard she was in the one in Bath. Apparently at Xmas
every youth hostel sends every other a Xmas card which is nice and friendly.

I get paid £12,437 pa (£804 a month after tax etc) as a school science technician which is
comparable to what a basic lab technician in industry or say a hospital would get. Also decent final
salary pension and 13 weeks a year holiday which is the main reason I do it. Oh, and loads of kids
to take the [censored] out of which is amusing. I took the job at about £9,500 pa 4 years ago, there's a
fairly rapidly increasing pay structure for the first few years. I think I'm pretty well off but we
only had 2 applicants for a recently advertised post and the one we appointed changed his mind
without bothering to tell us he wasn't coming.

Ian serious reply to a serious question.... I looked into this a few years ago (also work in I.T.!!)
The pay's not great, but living accommodation and food was part of the deal, plus it's mainly shift
work leaving the middle of the day to you.

It's a rare chance to live/work in buildings and areas you just couldn't afford yourself, but at the
same time you need to work your way up if u ever want to be a warden, and effectively establish a
firm home base. Otherwise you could be shifted about.

At the time my feelings were, if I was single (i.e. no kids, no financial commitments etc), wanted
to live in places I couldn't afford to move to, see more of the UK, and meet people with similar
interested to myself, I'd go for it, more as a vocational job, rather than a way to get wealthy.

In the end I stayed were I was and took the money [chicken ;0] Who knows, in a few years some of my
ties will be reduced and I might have another look.

I'd suggest the simplest way to find out, besides the better suggestions on here, would be to do
some volunteer work at hostels, talk to people within the organisation, and see what you feel
about it then.
