Zetia Statin Combinations

Zetia is new on the market and requires a prescription.

However, it is expensive.

Plant sterols also inhibit intestinal cholesterol absorption in a similar
manner that zetia does, and is much less expensive and does not require a
prescription.

I do not favor cholesterol lowering only with an intestinal absorption
medication; it does not address the need to improve cholesterol metabolism
inside the liver.

If you do take zetia or plant sterols, drink plenty of water because they
cause constipation.

After my bypass 6 years ago, I was put on Lipitor, It did a good job of
keeping my cholesterol around 160 and ldl's around 90. Gradually, my
cholesterol crept up and my Dr. increased my dosage from 10 to 20 to 40 mg.
When he added Zetia, he cut my dose down to 20 mg. Lipitor and my numbers
are 130 total and 68 on the LDL's--the lowest they have ever been. After
these numbers, I'm down to 10 mg. Lipitor which is probably a good thing.

My doc feels that a combo Zocor/Zetia will be on the market soon.
