This route bypasses the shopping/eatery section of Rte 1 in Groton:
At the T intersection after the Gold Star, take a right. (Be carefull,
rain runoff always leaves sediment across the path). At the end of
the path, take a right and climb up Riverview Ave, bear left onto
Walker Hill Road, and take Walker Hill down to Rte 12 (Rte 12 is the
same roadway as Rte 1, but Rte 1 goes over the Gold Star). Landmark:
The Fun 'n Food Clam Bar at Rte 12 and Walker Hill.
Cross Rte 12, and the road name changes to Toll Gate Road (a New
England tradition...in my town the same road changes names 4 times in
5 miles, twice without benefit of intersection!). Take Toll Gate to
it's end (approx 2 miles), the intersection of Rte 184 (also known as
the Gold Star Highway...even tho' published maps show Interstate 95 as
the Gold Star Highway....confused yet?). Take a left on Rte 184, and
the first right (approx 300 yards, Landmark: New England Power
Products, a motorcycle/John Deere dealer) onto Buddington Road. Take
Buddington road past the resevoir approx 3 miles to its end, the
intersection of Rte 1. Take a left, and you're on Rte 1 north, past
the worst of the congestion.
If you don't turn off of Rte 184 onto Buddington, you can follow 184
(actually a pretty nice ride) approx 6 miles to Rte 27 (a Y
intersection, well marked) and follow Rte 27 into Mystic. This route
will take you past the Mystic Seaport, and eventually dump you onto the
Stonington side of Mystic (at, guess where??? Rte 1). WARNING: part
of Rte 27 is pretty heavily traveled during tourist season, especially
the section from the Rte 95 overpass to Mystic Seaport. However, the
cager speeds are usually fairly low, and the road is good. A gorgeous
alternative is to make a right onto River Road (again, well marked)
shortly after turning on to Rte 27 from 184 (if memory serves, it's
the first red light...300 yards off 184). This is a very scenic route
right along the banks of the Mystic River ... heavily used by joggers,
walkers and cyclists. The occasional swan may chase you also. This
will end up on the Groton side of Mystic, in downtown Mystic at (not
again!) Rte 1.
Rte 1 through downtown is congested, but tolerable. The mesh-deck
bridge acros the Mystic River was redone a couple of years ago, with a
solid concrete ribbon that is great for cyclists.
If you are still interested, I've got a 15 mile bypass that is sorta
fun, but dumps you off just before a pretty steep climb up Fort Hill in
Groton.
Lemme know...
Keep em spinning!
