Why don't families cycle together more?

As an active cycling family we think nothing of getting on our bikes together as a family, it's second nature. But apparently that's not normal! So why don't more families cycle together? Whether for recreation, a trip to the shops, swimming, school or library or on extended tours.

We've been chewing this over informally having invested a lot of time trying to encourage non-cycling families to get on their bikes, with varying degrees of success. We garnered our thoughts on this in a blog we wrote back in 2009 but are now wondering, has anything changed?? Or has the world got worse!

Would love to hear your thoughts and views on both the barriers to participation and what kind of events, support, rewards work to get families biking together?

an acquaintance of mine cycles with his four children, not sure about the wife...
i guess it has to be a share passion for cycling and not something you could impose on family members,
or even better a sense of family and unity making them do things together !
