  1. I'm planning to go up Sharp Edge and down Hall's Fell ridge on Thursday.
Google groups has given me pointers to three parking options

    a. Threlkeld

    b. Lay by on the A66

    c. Mungrisdale

Having not been in the area since 1998 my memory is a wee bit fuzzy but
from what I have read b might be the best option. Any opinions or other
    options to further confuse me?

Can't advise you on this. But I was flying 26000' over Blencathra
this morning and very splendid it looked too. Mind you, what an
amazingly nice day it was. Anyone up there at around 8.15am today may have
    noticed the plane!

Good views to Snowdonia, Isle of Man, Arran and Jura on the way back too.

  5. Was in Mungrisedale a couple of weeks ago. The parking opposite the Church
Hall is taken up by a large portacabin or something and a load of fencing.
Parked on the roadside running upto the pub. Car left there all day and was
    OK on return.

Just a thought though if you are coming down Halls Fell it's a long walk to
    Mungrisdale.

We parked at Threlkeld, NY 322 252 (pre-GPS) according to my notes, but
    that was in 1974. :-)

I seem to remember we pulled off the A66 onto the small bye road, and
found a spot near a hotel.

Parked in Threlkeld twice last year and no problem parking, although it was
fairly early when we started out ...... then again, it was not 'in-season'
    times either!

The car park is on the road up to the Blencathra Centre. Also, it is a
pleasant walk to stretch the legs before starting up to Scales Tarn if going
    via Sharp Edge.

I don't like descending steep ground, much preferring to scramble
*up* Halls, (or Narrow as I learnt to call it) and then along
Sharp, which is levelish at the key point. Then descending over a
grass route. In fact what I have done is up Halls, down next to
Sharp (south IIRC), up Sharp then across the summit again to
descent the other end on grass to the car park, but I was younger
    then!
And surprise surprise I have a photo:-

Car park behind Village Hall in centre of Threlkeld.

Be warned that the footpath behind Doddock Farm ( not right of way)
was wired up a few weeks ago. Bit of a nuisance if you are walking
back from bottom of Sharp Edge to Threlkeld.

At 8.15am today I was somewhere in the Ambleside area. Can't say I
noticed any planes at the time but about an hour later some military jet
came over much closer to 260 feet. I didn't see what it was as it was
obscured by the trees but it was loud enough to be painful.

They are both good ways up but while much of Sharp Edge is like Striding
Edge Foule Crag at the end is harder than anything you are likely to
find on Halls Fell and ISTR the best (hardest) bits on Halls Fell are
avoidable. To have the best of both worlds go up Halls Fell, descend to
Scales Tarn and then return to the summit via Sharp Edge and Foule Crag.
For a dose of boredom you can descend via Mungrisedale common. :-)

I always bashed along the road before, but I notice there is a path
above the intake wall. Robert says the path above Doddick Fm is
closed, but is that the lower of the two paths? (ie, do you know if
there is still a way through)

Yes we flew over Ambleside too before tracing Windermere and
over Morcambe bay. We were rather higher than 260'!

    Its :
    Doddick Gill eastward 331 265 to 335 267
the above path which was very well used, gated with "please shut the
gates signs" etc ran just above the farm..

Has anyone any idea whats behind its closure ?

I think the map shows another map looping up hill above the highest
wall - havent got the map here.

There is always the bridleway just above the A66 - I havent used it t
    tho'
