I am very much opposed to women cyclists. They should stay at home and
take care of the children, prepare meals and clean the house and dust and
such things. Don't the Germans have an expression for this philosophy -
    something about the three K's?

I don't hate women, far from it, but I believe they should know their
place and stay in it. Leave the great world to us men, and that includes
cycling. If women need some exercise beyond their normal duties, they
could get down on the floor on their hands and knees and do some serious
scrubbing. We men like clean well scrubbed floors upon which to stride.
And then, besides that, we like women to be accommodating in the bedroom.

Rebecca is a six-time World Champion in the Individual Pursuit event. She
    is also
the recipient of 16 U.S. National Championship titles, in addition to an
Olympic Silver Medal in the 1984 Road Race in Los Angeles and a Bronze
Medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, in the Individual Pursuit event.
Her diversity as a cyclist has been evident as demonstrated by her
ability to win on the track, in road time trials and road stage races. In
1984, Rebecca won the inaugural HP Women's Challenge and went on to win
the following two editions as well. She began racing in 1977 and won her
first National Road Time Trial Championship in 1981, at the age of 18. In
addition to her athletic prowess, Rebecca was also known for her
    accelerated educational endeavors.
She entered the University of Washington at age 14 after completing the
    8th grade.
In 1985, she completed her studies following a hiatus to compete in
    cycling.
In 1997, at age 34, she was still competitive in cycling, placing 3rd at
the U.S. National Road Time Trial event.

But who cares what you think of women? I am waiting to hear from Beth and

I live and work in Vancouver, British Columbia. I'm an American
Citizen. I own property in the US and pay taxes there. I also vote for
State and Federal Government. My father was in the merchant marine in
WWII. He never attacked or fired a gun at another human being in war,
but he served none-the-less. For anyone to brand another a "traitor"
simply because they don't hold the same views (have different opinions),
espouse Christian beliefs and a Christian way of life is ludicrous in
the extreme. I had thought Mr. Dolan capable of conversing in an
intellectual (philisophical) discussion without resorting to four letter
expletives and childish name calling. I was quite obviously mistaken.
Perhaps we should stick to talking about recumbents.

Mr. Dolan is more than capable of engaging in an intellectual discussion
on most subjects under the sun, but it takes two for that. When one side
does nothing but mouth the same old liberal nonsense, which has been
totally discredited by history, and then gets all his facts wrong to
boot, then I have had it and I will not waste time trying to be
intelligent with an idiot. When I hear certain things being said, then I
KNOW I am dealing with an idiot. You more than qualify.

Rational debate is intelligent conversation between two individuals that
have reviewed the same information and formulated opinions/conclusions
based on their knowledge and experience. You have obviously not read the
Quran or the Bible so debating with you is like Clinton and Monica trying
to debate whether "Sunlight" or "Tide" get's the stain out better.

I have no interest in the theories and/or theologies of religion and most
especially NOT in their sacred books. The only thing I am interested in is
the practice of religion as it impinges on history. The Muslims have a very
poor record in this regard, but what is truly astounding is that they are
still in the Middle Ages and are acting on it. It is all nothing but sheer
    craziness.

A pacifist is not worth the time of day. You are outside the community of

this from a supposed genius lol

We geniuses often seem like very strange people to louts and idiots like
    yourself.

My genius lies in intellectual discourse and in thinking on abstract
subjects, not in getting on in the world. I have no interest in that other
than having enough to live on without having to work. The main thing is to
avoid work at all costs. I equate work (having a job) with slavery. Of
course, the assumption I am making about work is that you only do it in
order to have an income. Are there any other reasons, I wonder?

I once took a course at college on the Sociology of Work. It was the most
depressing subject I ever took at college. But the one thing I took away
from that course is that I never wanted to have anything to do with work -
so maybe it was a very worthwhile course for me to take after all. I wonder,
did I miss much by not working? No doubt, Mr. Sherman (not a happy camper
himself) will tell me what I have missed.

Christianity is a universal religion that has undergone repeated
    reformations and is highly sophisticated.

"Christianity" is a simple religion with a very simple message. There
isn't *anything* sophisticated about Jesus. He was a carpenter for
    pete's

You are confusing Jesus Christ with Christianity. They are not one and the
    same.

If you've accepted Christ as your personal Saviour, and follow his

"The Muslim conquest" you keep referring to is not condoned in the Quran.
There's a big difference between "politics" and "religion". The problem

Islam would still be a tribal religion of the nomadic Arabs in the deserts

No... You've got that wrong... It was the "conquest" of *men* that

Read some good secular histories of Martin Luther. Even for us Catholics, he

"Christianity" is a simple religion with a very simple message. There
isn't *anything* sophisticated about Jesus. He was a carpenter for
    pete's

You are confusing Jesus Christ with Christianity. They are not one and

    same.

If you've accepted Christ as your personal Saviour, and follow his
teachings, you are indeed a *Christian* by every sense of the word. Being
a "Christian" is probably one of the more challenging ways of life but I'm

There is no solution for this kind of ignorance other than reading secular

be cruel. I will leave Frank to his comforting religion as I would leave a

By the way, the Crusades were a very necessary reaction to the Muslim

Christian Europe could easily have been destroyed if the Muslim conquest had

Perhaps Mr. Olson should suggest his Muslim friends exercise some
tolerance. They could start with Muslim men being tolerant of their
    wives and their female children.

In many Muslim countries "honor" killing of girls and women by male
relatives remain the most prevalent physical threat to women and female

See the following for a recent example of an "honor" killing in Egypt.

    hhtp://tinyurl.com/6vg6f

That has absolutely nothing to do with "honor killing". The kind of
murderous attack you describe happens more frequently in India (among
Hindu and Sikh adherents), not in Muslim countries.

"Police arrested Ibrahim who later claimed to have stabbed his daughters
during a moment of temporary insanity because he feared they would one
day become promiscuous. Police also quoted neighbours as saying Ibrahim
had not allowed his girls to attend school."

"Ibrahim" clearly had a "screw loose". "He was missing a few humps from
his camel." The individuals responsible for the destruction of 9/11 were
insane as well. Rational people do not commit suicide. They don't

How come so many Muslims have camels with missing humps?

    I don't know.

I suppose it depends wholly on what period of time you wish to reference and
what actions you wish include under your "in the name of" umbrella. The

Generally speaking I'm not aware of a pattern of Christian men killing their

any Christian men stoning women to death for adultery. Since the inception
of the mullahs' rule in Iran, hundreds of women of
various ages have been and continue to be stoned to death for the crimes of

I'm not that much of a Christian so I'm definitely not in regular
communication with Jesus and can't speak for him. I'll have to take your
    word on this.

There's plenty of so-called Christians who abuse women's rights as well

So why the hell don't you put a period at the end of your sentence. Are
you another Mark Leuck put here on this earth to drive me insane?

Christians who abuse women are never approved of and they are always
condemned. Just the reverse of that is true in Muslim societies. Ever hear
of the Taliban - you moron?

In any event, you do not seem to feel the well documented abuse of women
and female children under Islam is anything that requires your
attention. Or maybe you, like so many others, are afraid to speak up
because of political correctness or the fear of physical retribution.

A good friend of mine is a Muslim. She doesn't speak out against her
mistreatment because... she isn't mistreated! Do I think she'd mistreat
female children because of her religion? Well, she's a qualified
paediatrician working in a Scottish hospital, so I'd say no!

Maybe the Muslims living in England are somewhat constrained since they
are a minority and the laws are against them doing what they would like to
do, at least in public - or did not that ever occur to you.

This is true. Not long ago I read about a new male Muslim immigrant to the
UK who honor killed his daughter for getting too friendly with a Christian
boy. The authorities came for the man and he couldn't understand why they
were there. What did I do wrong he wondered. He was bewildered that he
could be charged with a crime for protecting his honor.

The UK doesn't give Muslims a pass on honor killings, but that didn't stop
them from committing 12 (I believe) honor killings this year.

And how many have been killed in the name of "Christianity"? Jesus would
be appalled at most of the actions taken in his name.

Here is Mr. Sherman yet once again equating the unequatable. Islam -
Christianity; Palestinians -Israelis; Americans - Iraqis. It is all one and
the same to him. What a muddle he makes of everything.

Here are the complete relevant passages so readers can judge for themselves:

    Mr. Dolan,

The appearance of Wal-Mart that you have celebrated and the
disappearance of locally owned retail businesses (which you have also
celebrated) is directly responsible in the decreasing property and
rental values of your downtown real estate.

Has the money you saved on consumer goods shopping at Wal-Mart been
lesser or greater than your economic loss in downtown real estate?

Tom Sherman - Curmudgeon and Pedant

I have this wierd feeling that the area Mr Dolan lives in was suffering long
before Wal-Mart, mostly because of Mr Dolan

On a side note I moved to Texas a little over 20 years ago from Indiana,
never heard of Wal-Mart before that and the main reason they became popular
in the beginning was because they went to places that no other store chain
would go (small towns etc). They revolutionized the department store
industry just like those small businesses did beforehand.

I'm 44 years old and while I may not be as old as some here but I remember
when I was a kid living out in the country, we would shop at the downtown
stores Hoopston Illinois which was the closest town to us, you had maybe 2
stores to choose from and the selection was lousy, I would have killed for a
    Wal-Mart back then.

Like it or not if small businesses cannot adapt then they will go bye bye
just as Sears and K-Mart put many under when they were big, same could be
said for the popularity of malls, Wal-Mart is just another step and someday
someone will come along and do to Wal-Mart what they did to Sears or K-Mart

Small town downtowns went to hell long before Wal-Mart ever showed up. It
was those damn shopping malls on the edge of town that began the destruction
of the downtowns. I wish to hell the automobile, which made the shopping
malls possible, had never been invented. The old days were better when towns
had a center and all roads led to it. Now, if you can believe it,
professional offices and other types of offices are located out on the edge
of town. It is total insanity!

There are a few towns left in this country (usually way out West in the
boondocks) which have preserved their downtowns. They are a delight to be
in. It is like stepping back into the 1940's. I really feel sorry for the
young people who do not know what they have missed living in their metros
and their suburbs. The good old days really were the good old days.

The old downtowns are all in ruins, and not just in small towns either.
Fairly sizable cities have ruined downtowns too. Screw it! I am glad I am
old and am going to die and leave this miserable world soon. The young can
have it and they are welcome to it.
