Weeel..... apparently it's 920g, but the pack it goes into (which is
also used for inflating it and, optionally, as a pillow thereafter) is
(another, I assume) 155g, so I think it's just over a Kg in all.

I'm not sure how to describe the packed size. It's folded in thirds
longitudinally, and then rolled up as small as possible. It therefore
makes a thicker package than the average T-Rest, but perhaps a little
shorter. It's smaller than most sleepy bags, I should think: I reckon
it folds up quite small, really. Certainly it's a lot smaller and
lighter than the 2 self-inflating mattresses I carried last w/e, and
it's smaller (although about a third heavier) than the Insul Mat one
I've been trying.

Folding it small enough to get it back into the sack was initially a
bit of a faff earlier today, but once I got the hang of it it wasn't a
problem. However, I think I may just roll it up without folding it
longitudinally, put it in a waterproof bag and strap it to the side of
my sack, to give myself a bit of extra space inside. My Macpac is
apparently 50L, and if I'm going to be able to use it for the Scotland
trek next May then I'll need to have the tent and mattress on the
outside in order to make room for long-distance thingies that don't
accompany me on w/e backpacks, like sandals, more food, maps and a bit
of extra clothing.

But look at those weights though. Fine for car camping but a hell of a
lot to walk with. Not sure but I'd guess it's heavier than a deluxe TR

And that's without all that air you would need to carry for inflating
it.

's not that bad, honest. It's not much heavier than the luxury
mattress I recently bought, and it's lighter than carrying both that
and my 3/4 length original TR. I just can't sleep properly on those
other ones <little sob>, so I don't mind a bit of extra weight. I'll
just leave about 10 minidiscs at home to offset the extra ;-)

There is an inflation piccy - in fact, some sort of animated gif! -
somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I'll have another look. I agree
it's confusing! I had to ask for a demo in the shop where I first saw
the mattress last weekend, but here's how it works.

At one end of the mattress there are two valves, just like the ones on
a T-Rest. The mattress comes packed in a waterproof 'dry bag' i.e.
one of those bags where you close the top up and roll it over a few
times to seal air out (or in). In the middle of the bottom of the dry
bag there's a little hole, normally filled with a plastic bung. In
order to inflate the mattress one undoes one of the mattress valves,
removes the bung from the hole in the bag, applies the hole to the
mattress valve (it pushes into place and locks on), opens the bag to
fill it with air, rolls the top of the bag over a few times to seal
the air in the bag and then squashes the bag, thus pushing the air
into the mattress. It sounds more complicated than it is... It's
necessary to do about 10 bag squishes to get enough air into the
mattress.

There's down in the mattress, and for that reason apparently it's
fatal to use lung power, as that would get the down damp and prevent
it from lofting/cause it to freeze in v. cold places.

I accidentally left it at work y/day, or I might have tried it out
here last night (sad person that I am). Maybe tonight... 🙂

Actually, something like adapting to harder beds at home as a gradual
process may well help. If you're used to a soft bed then pretty much
anything that's very portable is going to give problems, but if you're
used to reasonably firm supports then sleeping on them in a tent is less
of a change so possibly easier.

It's a bit weird... I've tried sleeping on the T-rest on my bedroom
floor (did I mention I was sad?) just to see how it is, and it's fine.
For some reason, though, it ceases to be comfy when I get it out into
the tent. I'm pretty sure it's not psychological. I'm at a bit of a
loss....
