I think that's where Rick got the 'wannabe pro wrestler' line.

    Yeah. I read that later.

It's probably also because you're a woman, which isn't to say that
it's your fault. We seem to expect them to try harder to avoid
    looking older as they age.

    Quoted message said:

    Is that fair?

No, definitely not. But IMHO many women don't help matters by
pandering to the prejudice with excessive makeup, cosmetic surgery
etc. A fit bod, nice hair and a friendly smile are much more attractive
    than any of that.

A man becomes distinguished as he gets older. He can
have a pot belly and no one minds.

Well, I don't mind it any less than I do on a woman. I'm not
responsible if women go after fat old men with money :-)

One thing I have found as I age....I certainly can't participate in
some of the things I did when I was young. Now that I have taken an
interest in riding a bike I realize that people older than me are
doing it. It's a wonderful sport and its age friendly. I remember my
father in law riding a bike well into his 70's. So, ok, we have to
leave some of the sports we loved behind us....but its nice to know
there are age friendly sports still available to us. I tried playing
volleyball last summer with a bunch of my daughters friends. )All in
their 20's.) They were fine the next day. I was soaking in ben gay.
And I was a damn good volley ball player in my twenties. Damn good.
It's a little depressing to admit you can't do the same things you
could do when you were younger......In some sports you are considered
TOO OLD when you hit thirty five.
Whoever said age is a state of mind did not try to play volleyball for
hours on the beach at age 50 with team members in their twenties. I
look forward to enjoying my bike.

I had the same experience with volleyball when I was 22. I played one
afternoon after not playing since high school, and could barely walk the
next day. All in all, at 39, I can't think of much I can't do now that I
did then. I'm sure my 50m dash is a little slower than it was, and
playing football now would be stupid, but it wasn't all that smart back
then either. I really don't mind getting older. In a way, it is a
measure of success, because I knew lots of people who didn't make it
    this far.

There are some physical things that I do annually which give something of a
calibration, stuff like snow shoveling, turning the garden beds, prepping
my sailboat every spring, etc. In all those things I can outperform myself
of 20 years ago. I remember spraining an ankle in my 20's and being shocked
that it took weeks to heal, I was used to days from my teens.

I just got back from 2 hr/35 mile ride, temps in low 30's, snow covered
roads, using a MTB with studded knobbies. I feel pretty good. A ride like
that would have crippled me in my 20's.

Even if your kidding I am going to take this as a compliment because
it just made my year. So don't take it back. Let me bask in the glow

FWIW, "Red Cloud" is a well-known troll on this and other Usenet groups. His

re: "I know I will never be in that good of shape.", "That's impossible."

    And, so it is.

    That's a defeatist attitude, Maggie.

At age 38, I was overweight (6', 200+ lbs), and a smoker. I never imagined
myself as capable of being "athletic". Fortunately, I bought a low-end
mountain bike to help me quit smoking. I've been riding ever since, and at
51 I now ride around 4,000 miles per year, including a yearly riding
vacation that normally includes big mountains. Here's a picture of me from
my trip to see the Tour de France this year:
    http://www.shastasoftware.com/CycliStats/biketours/TDF2004/TDF2004_013.htm
    (or, http://tinyurl.com/3o3cs )

At 38, I could never have done, or even imagined myself doing, some of the
rides I've done in the last few years.

The key thing is to make regular physical activity part of your life - shoot
for 6-7 hours per week and you *will* start to get stronger. I suspect this
is harder for women than for men, because women tend to be more focused on
the needs of others, but at 50 perhaps it's time for you to make more time
    for yourself.

FWIW, Henry Ford once said "If you think you can do a thing or think you
    can't do a thing, you're right."
