Indeed, but the problem is training the machine to do all that work for
you.
That's the purpose of the convention.

just use the filters, scoring and rules in your newsreader to do it for
you based on the subject/text. What? It doesn't have them? Well get
yourself a better newsreader then - a copy of Gravity is recommended!

What make you think that I start a lot of photography threads? Check
Google.

Photography discussions mostly start as thread drifts. Or others start
them. I rarely ever start a specific photography thread (Okay, I admit,
G3 Contrast Range was my fault!), the nearest I get is just some links
to photos, e.g. the recent Fireworks Pics thread - but that was OT
because of the subject, not because it was about photography.

Great, but how do we tell the newbies? The problem with newbies are
that they're new, they've never posted here before, they haven't
bothered to read the newsgroup, so they don't know the conventions!

It might be easier for all the regulars to prefix their messages with
REG, to identify all other messages as being from newbies! ;-)
