Technically, I should be a homer for Simard, but note also that Simard
was (probably unintentionally) closing the door on Berden. Had Berden
not elbowed his way forward there, he was going to get accidentally run
into the fans.

I leave it to others to determine whether Simard was improperly changing
his line, but I think it might be subtle enough to warrant no punishment.

Some things are just racing incidents,

Ed, Does Berden have a reputation for this? I've got Vossem on DVD from
2003 and he gives an elbow and hip check to Vannoppen on a slow right hand
turn at the top of the climb - puts Vanoppen right into the snow fencing.

Commentator Michel Wuyts at first doesn't see the elbow of Berden and
thinks he is lucky to escape unharmed from Simard's crash, but gets it
in the rerun. Co-commentator Paul Herijgers concludes: "If you do that
to the wrong guy, then it's 1-1 on the next lap I think..."

I agree that Simard did seem to be sort of wobbling up the straight - he
really didn't look to be holding a line nearly as well as Berden. I thought
his line did seem to be fairly consistently heading towards the barrier, so
I thought Berden should have been able to adjust for that and go by on the
left. Of course, because they were heading towards the camera, it makes it
hard to really tell what was happening, due to the lack of perspective. It
may have been Simard's bad luck at having his bars turned a little to the
left when Berden caught his right arm.

It's not a sprint, where there are technical judgments
about holding the line. The guy in front can take the
line he wants, although lapped riders should know not
to cause an obstruction. If Berden didn't want to get
caught next to the barrier, he should have passed Simard
on the outside.

On the other hand, it didn't look like he touched
Simard very hard. But knocking his arm is less kosher
than just leaning on his shoulder.

Let the punishment fit the crime: the commissaires should
rule that Ben Berden will be called "Benoit" and forced
to eat nothing but poutine until the next World Cup race.
