I bought a pair of Rudy Project sunglasses 5 years ago for $100 that I
wear "as a matter of habit", I suppose. They work just as well now as
when new, except for a few lens scratches, so I don't see myself buying
another pair soon, knock on wood.

I wear a pair of inexpensive sunglasses even on overcast days for the same
reasons you mentioned. I wear contact lenses. When I'm running, and I get
into a good rhythm I don't seem to blink as often as usual. The sunglasses
do a good job of protecting me from dirt and other debris in the air. I
can't imagine spending a lot of money on these. They do get scratched up,
and I've lost them pretty frequently.

I almost always wear non-prescription glasses. Perhaps because I work in a
machine shop, I feel more comfortable with eye protection. Also my doctor
wants me to protect my eyes from harmful UV rays, so I wear the dark
glasses on daytime runs. I wear the clear lens glasses at night about half
the time. I like cheap safety glasses, which are available tinted or
clear. I use UVEX "Genesis" with the "XTR" antifog coating in either clear
or "Espresso" (brown tint) with Chums retention strap (glasses: see for
example www.grainger.com part nos. 6XF73 clear and 6XF75 tinted) -- or the
Willson "Cruiser" in clear (grainger no. 3PA48) and "Cappuccino" (grainger
no. 3PA50). The Willson "Cruiser" comes with a retention cord, and they
are cheaper. Both of these styles are very light weight, and designed to
be worn by workers who sweat. These are available at industrial supply
stores, hardware stores, etc.

I always wear shades in races as a competitive advantage. I know it makes the
other runners nervous when they can't see your eyes. It's a lot easier to
sneak up on and pass a runner when you are wearing shades. ;-)

The other reason is tearing due to wind. With contacts, just the speed of my
running is often enough to cause tearing.
