The debate is still going on ... When Bartali died some of his supporters
carried a banner with "Gino ask your water bottle back!". Of course, the
most interesting question is not who was handing the water to whom, but why
it generated such a heated debate for so many years. And by the way, if I'm
giving something to someone, it's he who will be looking at the object and
not I.

the 1949 Tour of Italy) has some interesting observations about doping in
the peloton during the Coppi period. It's also a wonderfully literate book.

at the 1949 Tour of Italy) has some interesting observations about doping
in the peloton during the Coppi period. It's also a wonderfully literate
book.

For those that can read Italian, a pretty bit by Buzzati from the Corriere
Della Sera, May 20, 1949 (not about Coppi, but very pretty)
Parecchie cose, non moltissime, chi scrive ha visto correre, in un modo o
nell'altro sopra la superficie del mare e della terra; mai però i grandi
ciclisti in gara sotto il sole, con il numero attaccato alla schiena, i
tubolari a tracolla e la faccia ingessata di polvere. Ha visto, per esempio,
correre i bambini in ritardo verso la scuola, le saette del temporale
attraverso il cielo, la gente in direzione dei rifugi antiaerei quando
ululavano le sirene. Anche un ladro una volta ho visto correre, volava
addirittura perché lo inseguivano, in via Andrea Del Sarto a Milano; e poi
lo raggiunsero e lo pestarono, ma non potrei garantirlo perché tutto
successe in fondo alla strada e c'era una grande confusione. Ho visto
correre gli struzzi come schioppettate nel deserto d'Africa; correre
attraverso la notte con molli e affascinanti curve i proiettili delle navi
nemiche col loro luminoso rosso e qualcuno propriamente rimbalzava
sull'acqua
come un piattello, schizzando via impazzito. Ho visto correre i celeri treni
all'approssimarsi del crepuscolo, coi loro finestrini già illuminati e i
sogni e le fantasie pertinenti attraverso la campagna solitaria; ed erano
bellissimi.

Ho visto correre sulla via Aurelia, tanti anni fa, un ciclista in maglietta
che si allenava e uno disse che era Girardengo, ma io credo di no, perché
non gli assomigliava. Ho visto anche la staffetta di Carlo il Temerario
correre ventre a terra per le selve, portando all'ultimo momento la grazia
al suo fedele scudiero creduto per calunnia traditore e a cui il boia stava
per spiccare la bionda testa; ma tutto questo succedeva al cinematografo e
forse non era tutto vero. Ho visto coi miei occhi correre poco prima
dell'alba
sopra i tetti di Milano, un paio di dischi volanti; i quali erano di color
rosso e amabili all'aspetto; tuttavia nessuno mi ha voluto credere. Ho visto
correre il tempo, ahimè, quanti anni e mesi e giorni, in mezzo a noi uomini,
cambiandoci la faccia a poco a poco; e la sua velocità spaventosa, benché
non cronometrata, presumo sia molto più alta di qualsiasi media totalizzata
da qualsiasi corridore in bicicletta, in auto o in aeroplano-razzo da che
mondo è mondo.

I assume you are referring to the beautiful and poetic account of the
rider close to physical collapse who uses amphetamines in a futile
attempt to avoid inevitable and complete breakdown.

A wonderful book.
