No doubt the year he finishes the Tour, especially as there is no
suspense on whether his team will be invited...

And he just won the 4th stage in the Tour of Qatar, ahead of Boonen.

It would actually be nice to see the guy go out on top of his game.

dumbass,
that would've been 2002.
i think it's a rule, all italian stars have to ride three washed up
seasons before retiring.

I'd bet that he will be one of those seriously contending Milan-San Remo.

Why is it that you seem to know so much about "washed up"?
He's been hanging out with you possible? Oh, I couldn't resist.

My dear friend Ken,
You have lost any sense of humor. Be careful, or otherwise Triumph the Comic
Insult Dog will be sicced on you.
What's going on? Talk it out.

it's an honest observation. a lot of italian stars in particular stick
around until an embarassing decline.
they may pull off one or two good rides in that time, but are not what
they were.
bugno, tafi, chiapucci, pantani, and some lesser stars like gotti,
baffi, furlan. bartoli is the exception. even italy-based russians are
following suit, konyshev and tonkov on LPR ?
it was a crime that cipo wasn't at the 2002 tour. he was a disgrace in
the 2003 GW throwing bottles at the moto commissaire (the video kunich
says to check out) and getting dropped by his team in the vuelta TTT
before bailing on his "free" spot at the worlds. not to mention talking
trash about doing the pursuit at the olympics.
true, he is one of the most charismatic and affable riders ever, but he
should respect the sport, he's made plenty of money. he should've left
gracefully like boardman, museeuw (doping issue not withstanding).
Yeah, not like Lemond who KICKED ASS his last year....... right?
Athletes are athletes. They only know they are "finished" when it's
only too aparent and embarrassing. Otherwise they would keep on going.
Who wants to give up the spotlight before you really have to?

Dumbass -
Athletes who are objective about their abilities. They may not be in
the majority, but there are many examples.

It's not the spotlight. It's the youth. Admitting to yourself that you are
fading is a step that is done privately. In so public a spot it is that
much harder.

PillowBiter-
Then you would agree that targeting Italians is inaccurate.

By this rule, Francesco "George W." Casagrande hung on for three
disappointing years before retiring after 2003, which sounds about
right. The lack of an official retirement announcement is a
superfluous detail.
