Yeah, its something about Kathy I think.

Speaking of Kathy, have people seen the article about her trainin/coaching
clinics in the latest Bicycle Australia. Didn't recognise her photo without
the dyed blonde hair, she looks totally different to back in the days of her
    Barcelona win.

    Cheers

Huh? Where are the bike inspections in tri's? I've never seen one.

Usually it consists of checking for bar plugs... that's about it. They
sometimes check whether your helmet is fitted properly...

I've only ever done sprint tri's.. never seen any sort of inspection
there. The office tri-dude said he's not had a bike inspection before
but sometimes they make you wear a helmet to registration to make sure
    it fits properly.

Not sure what series you folks go in but every tri I have ever done, Mini, Sprint, Olympic you cant get into transistion without your helmet on, and I was even rejected once this year because it was to lose, I was shocked, and then had to work out how to adjust it!

they also always check, bar end plugs and the brakes at least function, maybe I look un-trustworthy... *shrug*

I watched a niece and nephew at the sanitarium Try-ath-alon last weekend, 3000 kids, it was fantastic, I had never seen so many, shopping baskets and handle bar tassles in all my life... it was a brilliant site.

Most of the time I only see bar plug and helmet checks, but I recall one
sprint tri last year where there were two disqualifications and the 2
that were DQ'd were supposedly warned as they put their bikes in
transition that if they didn't change whatever the problem was they
would be DQ'd. Unfortunately after the race nobody seemed to know what
the problem actually was. I reckon as long as you are on a clean, newish
bike with your helmet strapped on, and you rego number easy to see they
generally wouldn't give you a second glance.

I know those time trials are pretty close, could the handle bars make
    that much difference ??

I think this is her at last year's DeBortoli Tour of the Yarra Valley:

As far as I can see those bars are above the level of the tops of the
wheels - making them quite legal according to the rules.

That is not the set up she used, this race had a timetrial that was specifically not to use time trial bikes hence the setup seen here:

  9. Not sure if you guys are serious or not. The point was that there were
to be no TT bikes in the prologue, just road bikes, set up like road
bikes, with regular drop bars. The issue was that she had her bars
lower than allowed. Of course, she argues that she's a small girl and
that's why the bars were so low. Anyone got a pic of her regular
position on a road bike? I reckon a pic of her in another road stage
(preferably in a previous race) with the same set-up would make a good
    case. Otherwise, she's just cheating.
I assume the 'no TT bike' rule was to do with reducing the cost of
coming out for international teams - less bikes. Dunno how many
international teams came out, but I reckon that's the idea.

  10. And here is a photo of her in another road race. Bars look above the
    wheel...

The were quotes to say that the mechanic had lowered the bars for the time trial, just took it past the allowable limit, she had them raised before the afternoon race.

  12. Not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me, but yeah, that's
the point, I guess. Her bars were deliberately lowered to below the
allowable limit to offer an advantage.
I say a minimum two year ban 😉

Yes. Kathy's very strong, but TT's are all about aerodynamics.

And so she should be relegated to last place for wearing such an ugly
    helmet.

I think there something in her being the shortest rider, her bike almost doesn't have a head tube which means there's less space to drop the bars in.
Should she be using low profile bars with a narrower gap between the drops and top? Would that be UCI legal?

  19. Maybe, but then her hands wouldn't be as low, so her aero advantage
would be the same as lowering her usual bars down to the legal limit.
