As in the south-west on business took the opportunity to visit Exmoor.
Parked the car at Dunkery Gate [SS895406] for a short stroll to Dunkery
Beacon. The path to the Beacon was very easy and wide. After taking a
few photographs at the top decided to battle against the stiff breeze
and head in a westerly direction for a few hundred metres before taking
a smaller, more interesting path back to the car.
Decided to drive directly northwards over Dunkery Hill on the small
road to Luccombe and then onto Selworthy. Parked the car in the
National Trust (Church) car park close to Selworthy Green [SS919467].
As (foolishly) didn't have a 1:25000 map just a GPS waypoint for
Selworthy Beacon I set off in the wrong direction! Headed towards
higher ground, ended up contouring towards Combeshead before picking up
the correct path. Instead of walking just over 1.5km to the summit (?)
I ended up walking round a low-level 250m+ Horseshoe for ~3km. The view
from Selworthy Beacon was excellent, all South Wales clearly visible to
the north.
Back to the car by the correct route, down to the Memorial Hut and
followed the stream down to Selworthy Combe. Not technical walks in
any stretch of the imagination but very relaxing in verdant
surroundings.
