  1. This month's Discover Magazine has an interesting article on artificial
    sweeteners.

    According to the article, a graduate student was told to "test" an
    experimental compound. The student thought the word was "taste." Thus, he
    discovered by accident that it was sweet.... This is how Splenda was
    discovered.

    They also mention that the a person would have to drink 600 cans of
    aspartame sweetened soda to get as much methanol and formaldehyde as are in
    an ordinary orange.

  2. Would be interesting to see the entire article, preferably posted
    here. I was only able to find a teaser, describing that phosgene and
    chlorine are used to make splenda.

    I doubt they are actually using the phosgene gas, but are using
    the decay product of the gas + water, Hydrochloric Acid. I
    suspect
    that phosgene gas despite its toxic nature is much easier and
    safer to
    handle than high concentrations of HCl.

    I always laugh when I read these sorts of comments.

    Common table salt is made from sodium and chlorine. Sodium is a
    highly flammable metal that burns so intensely most fire fighting
    methods are worthless to stop a sodium fire. Chlorine was used
    as a poisn gas during WWI.

    Cows are made from grass. Eating a lot of grass is a major
    cause of diabetes.

    Water is made from hydrogen and oxygen. When those two gases
    mix, you get an explosion like the one on the Hindenburg.

    every single one of them. Some are worse than others but
    never imagine that any of them are actually good. What's
    good is you're replacing a lot of stuff that's a bit bad
    with a tiny amount of stuff that's medium bad. It's the
    net change that's for the better, not any bulls-eye hit on
    "good".
