Hey Bleve, hows the bike??

I did the 1:20 on Saturday, and got up in a reasonable time (given

The best bit was descending though. My 1400 descends pretty well,
but this is a whole new game .. it just feels really
solid cornering at speed, and I got an extra km or 2
per hour on my local dropoff (Boronia Rd drop down to the Dandenong
Ck trail from Canterbury Rd) - maybe the better aerodynamics of the
wheels? I didn't expect it to feel as good as it does. I
haven't ridden a lot of different roadies, so I don't have a lot
to compare it to, but this does feel pretty good. I reckon I might
just crack 100km/h on it if I can find the right hill 🙂

The 1400 has Mavic open pro and DT Hugi wheels, which are good kit,
but the Bontrager racelites maybe make a difference? They're certainly
a lot more aerodynamic. Most of the time for me that makes no
difference (me, on the front? Only at the last 5 metres 🙂 )

I'm looking forward to doing some hillsprints on it, then
I'll know how solid it is, but for now, two thumbs up, and every
dollar well spent.

Did you see the photos? They don't do it justice, as the

My 2300 has the same wheels I think. The only thing I've noticed is a
slight increase in the effects of crosswinds due to the bladed spokes.
So far they've kept true which impresses me for factory wheels. I've
noticed the overall weight reduction (mine is a 63cm and seems to weigh
close on 9kg) over anything else I've ridden - I find I love accelerating
because it _seems_ so much snappier.

Yes, I'm jealous. Oh well, I did okay. I initially wanted a 2005 1400.
LBS said no problems, have one in 2 weeks. 3 months later, nothing and
they couldn't even tell when they were likely to get one. After much
messing around they ended up giving me the 2300 for $600 more than
the 1400.

Yeah I did - they're too small. 🙂 I did manage to make out your name on
the top tube. Here's a picture of mine (from the trek site). Initially
didn't like the colours, but it's growing on me.

That's exactly the way I decided not to ride the very sexy carbon
Kestrel... actually I was really scared of damaging it too. But it was
sooooooooo sexy. Yum. Not as cool as my Learsport though. Yeah. Right.

The learsport is unique though! I was at the uni bike shop on Monday and
this guy was going through a catalogue, I was pointing out the equiv of
my bike but saying I had different colours he said "yeah, I know, it's
the yellow one" I was like "WTF?" and he had recognised me from
Murarrie. Scary, because I've only been there 3 times. 4 times?

the bike go fast.

My new bike is very nice, but it won't win a race for me.

It's funny, after you asked, I triple-checked (counted them again ..),
and
checked the bontrager website .. the site says they're 20/24 F/R, but I
can't
count more than 16 F & R.

You know you want a Kestrel... I don't see too many around, though there are a couple in the triathlon crowd in Syndey. All I need now are some Zipp 404s, though I'm not so sure they'd make good commuting wheels.

If the frame survives daily abuse, I'll let you know if they make a good beater bike.

Quite sure. the only writing is "race lite" and "bontrager". There's
some fine print about a US patent No. and spoke lengths, that's it.

I asked Trek about this, here's their (the Aust rep, so probably
wrong) reply :

As you know P1 bikes are hand painted and are treated individually in
production. WRT your wheels I would say that the stock wheels were not
available at that time so Trek made a substitute. If the do alter spec
they tend to spec up rather than down grade. Sometimes you can get
lucky!

Hmm, lucky you. I know my bike didn't have exactly the same parts that
was advertised (I got an FSA headset when it should have been Cane
Creek).

What's a 'P1' bike?

I'm not convinced it was that sort of thing - the wheels don't
exist on a catalogue, and I'd be most suprised if they re-badged
race-x-lite aeros as racelites. I reckon it's a 2006 wheel and
he (the Oz agent) doesn't know what it is.
