Just back in ....... so a short TR
Sat - Grasmere to Easedale Tarn, a quick break, and then onto Codale Tarn
for rough camp Sat night.
Very quiet throughout the day - where did all the bank holiday tourists go
to? Not that I'm complaining.
A gusty night, and a very wet start to Sunday (Argos pro action tent gets
10/10 for performance btw)
Abandoned all plans for further walking once I hit the ridge intending to go
towards Sergeant Man.
High winds and driven rain. Progress very difficult. First time I've been
stopped in my tracks whilst trying to walk downhill! Later heard reports of
75 mph winds. Counted 6 people moving around Stickle Tarn by 11:00.
Despite the conditions I still passed people 'n kids heading up from Dungeon
Ghyll with inadequate clothing/gear. Spoke to 1 man (breathless 20 mins from
the foot of DG, trainers/packamac, trailing child) indicating that he had
some way to go and really should cut his losses for the day. Blank look -
well at least I tried.
Bussed it back to Gramsere ending up in YHA , 3/4 mile from where I started
the day before (Boo Hoo) and drenched.
<Wife impressed back home, she was having a BBQ in the sunshine ;-( >
Hung off on Monday, watching the weather. Typical - clear and sunny.
Tues - to Ambleside crossing Loughrigg Fell via L. Terrace/Rydal Cave and
then an 'interesting' vertical diversion up through the bracken - not a good
idea.
Another clear day, but unfortunately moving away from the hills, and towards
the trip back home.
Side notes
1. First time I've tried the train/bus option from the south coast - it
works very well and cheap enough to have me planning some more short solo
breaks in the not too distant future.
2. YHA non members policy - definitely dragging in an interesting cross mix
of punters, but with an associated downside from the cheap B&B brigade who
think it's a good idea to noisily hit the dorms after the pubs close.
