Yes, the French built the city orginally, but if you look at the
neighborhoods that suffered the least amount of damage in New Orleans
through this terrible tragedy, they were the neighborhoods in the
French Quarter. Some of them didn't even get wet. So I would say that
the French were very smart, in that when they built that city or
started it before there were levees and such, they built on the high
ground. Please get your facts straight before you blather onward.

rare trolls just to see how our French friends would react. I'm not
really surprised at the lack of response, might just be that the level
of the French posters here is so high, and it is, but I'd doubt that's
the only factor. If I'd tossed out a comparable troll about the US, I'd
be buried in foaming hatemail by now.

No not really. With all the current French bashing going on over Lance
I wanted to see what would happen.
Personally I think France has a lot more right with it's culture than
we do, that's for damn sure and it's a shame that the world is becoming
Wal-Martized.
I don't want to get bogged down in military history here but want to
toss out an observation. The German commander of the two FFL battalions
of former Nazis who were the most effective forces ever to fight in
French Indo-China or Vietnam made this comment to the commander of
French forces there when the battalions were disbanded. "The French
troops are magnificent warriors, they go to their deaths proudly, it's
too bad their leadership puts them in that position. If is wasn't for
the failure of their leaders the French could do anything."
That's coming from someone who spent his whole war on the eastern
front, refused a soft assignment in the concentration camps, and had
several of those who were at the camps shot when they tried to joing
his retreating unit. He held what was left of his unit together until
they managed to slip out of the Soviet zone after witnessing the
Soviets slaughtering just about anyone they could get their hands on.
He along with a bunch of his men were discovered and identified by the
French and offered the choice of jail or the Legion since they weren't
considered war criminals by anyone but the Soviets. As a group they
chose to stay together and kept fighting what they saw as the same
enemy in a different place. What they accomplished was staggering with
minimal casualties, because they were true warriors. The Chinese
government started a propaganda campaign that the left in France was
happy to run with which caused them to be disbanded. All of them had
more than served out their committment and since they couldn't fight
together anymore, they left, stripping the French of incredibly
valuable resources when they needed them most.
As far as they were concerned they had never been defeated on the
battlefield, only by their leaders, and he believed that it was the
same for the French. For what it's worth.
I won't even comment on OUR military leadership, I've done way too
much of that.
Since the end of WW2 I'd actually say that the US and French
governments have been friendly enemies rather than allies. There have
been so many cases of them working directly against each other that
it's ridiculous to pretend that we are allies. Different countries,
different agendas, since I think it's probably 50/50 as to who was
right and wrong over all this it's not something I'm going to get
worked up over.

Mississippi by the Atchafalaya thus preserving a city built in a swamp
that has been subsiding slowly over the years due to groundwater
pumping, and man's other silliness. Then reenforcing the "security" of
