You've got me inspired Ess. Just consulted with the trinewbies.com site for the 10week program and think I might have a crack at the Olympic Dist event (wife not impressed). Third last in the event last year, let's see if I can manage a last this year.

Good stuff Dave. I went along to the Tri-Alliance free clinic on Saturday. There was some discussion about preparing for the Olympic distance race which I stayed to listen to out of curosity. I'm doing the Brooks race (400m/16km/4km) which is more than enough for me at this stage. Anyway, the words of advice were: - Practice riding into a headwind as there will most likely be one on the day. - There is a long hill coming out of Geelong, those that did Amy's ride will know the one I mean and be able to comment on it's relative steepness and training to be done for it. - The swim could be a challenge as apparently there are waves that bounce off the pier. - Probably some undulating hills and stairs on the run. One legged squats were recommended. - build up endurance, add 5-10 minutes each week

Bugger. Someone want to suggest a hill I might know that is comparable??

Oh great running up steps. Just what I need to expose my lack of run training. 🙁

Teeheehee, doncha just lurve running up stuff?
This morning I came across a trail that descended approx 300m over 900m of trail. Upon closer inspection, the first 100m was flat. And it looked like the last few hundred metres were also flat, and like the bit in between was a lot steeper than 45 degrees. I was smart enough not to investigate further... (although I'll probably go check it out next week, with fresher legs)

Ess, are you training in the TT position or just with road bars? Pretty obvious I guess, but it really helps to ride in the TT position (or bike) to get used to it. That way you won't be squirming around, or getting sore neck/shoulders during the race.
Adam
Basically the position I've been riding is low on the hoods, sortof with my wrists resting on the bar, if that makes any sense. Haven't been riding with aerobars yet.
Yeah I'm interested in any sort of feedback, so yeah that plan would be good.

So Ess are we going to see you on aerobars on a BR. It'll be nice to see someone else cop sh!t for using them. 😉

I have a set you can borrow, if you want. Don't *ever* use them in a bunch ride.

The first/last km looks nasty and not much flat in between. Perfect for a hill climbing whippet like you, not so nice for me (must lose 4kg by Easter).
And I'm liking the altitude map even less for the run. Sigh, I miss Beach Rd.

Ahh and then I worked out the scale and realised the gradient is only a couple of % at worst, eg. 40m climb over the first 1500m at 2.6% (anyone want to check that maths).

You're planning on being about to eat 4KG of hot cross buns to make up for the loss?

Nahh, the triathlon is on Easter Sunday. I plan to go home and eat 4kg of chocolate.

Haha yeah I was just going to say its a nothing climb, still some elevation is better than none 🙂

One thing to note is that points on the altitude graph are only corresponding to the points you manually create on the route.
That means if you make a long straight line between two points, intersecting a crazy hill, you will see a constant slope on the altitude graph with no crazy hill to be seen.
