  1. Started at 300 on Jan 1. Now am at 284.

I do aerobics onan eliptical machine 5 times a week, with 3 days of
    assisted pull-ups.

I feel like, for all my hard work, I should be losing more weight, or at
least looking a bit better than I do.

With free weights and resistance training, I admit those things have me
a little intimidated. Where do I start?

First, watch out for our Tourette's Syndrome Name-Morphing Troll. Any
advice you get that refers to your anus is from It, no matter whose name
    is on the header.

Second, go read the site that everyone else is going to send you to.
Don't worry that it's aimed at women, it's a great place to learn.

    http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

Third, it's about diet more than exercise. Weightlifting is certainly a
good way to partition weight loss more towards fat (while preserving
lean) but in the end you're going to have to learn how to eat as a
slender person, which means you have to change your diet.

I recommend you hang out at alt.support.diet. This place can help you -
and will help you - if you can see past the troll. But you will find
    more commaradery there.

By sending me a viseo. Watching fat people exercise is pretty hilare!

No FIRST, don't take diet advice from an overweight ton of lard. This

I believe you may have meant camaraderie, which is not a spelling pull
but simply drawing attention to the fact that you are using a word
with which you are not totally unfamiliar.

This is in line with your usual modus operandi which is based loosely
on the old adage "Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread."

  7. Weight loss is more about food than exercise, a decent healthy diet makes
you lose weight, exercise keep you from looking like a boneless chicken once
    you're done losing.

Somebody will give you the stupendeous (however it's spelled) website URL..
good one.. there's plenty of good ressources online.. but I would give a
good look at what you eat.

    G-luck

You have to learn to ignore the trolls. Did you go to Krista's web
site like Dally suggested? If not, the fault is yours.

I did. It was helpful to some degree. I didn't say "NO" help. I said
    "next to".

    So tell me this:

Is it worthless to do 28 minutes of aerobic excercise every day without
    weight training?

Yes and no. All exercise is good, and your cardiovascular system needs
    exercise.

But in looking at it from purely a "weight loss" perspective, I think you
are more productive with resistance training ALONG WITH controlling your
diet. From a weight loss perspective, cardio in nothing but a tool to burn
that extra 400 calories that day. If you go home an eat an extra bowl of
cereal for dessert, you've just completely negated the cardio...from a
weight loss perspective. Many people think that if they go to the gym, that
gives them license to eat whatever they want when they get home. Nothing
could be farther from the truth. Weight loss comes down to calories in vs.
calories out. If you eat under your AMR (active metabolic rate), you'll
    lose weight. Period.

First, when your run, you burn those ~400 calories to be sure. But, that's
basically it. The next day, if you don't run, you're right back to square
one from a AMR perspective. In other words, your metabolism isn't much
    better off.

When you resistance train, you obviously burn calories while lifting. But
your muscles will be busy repairing themselves over the next day or so.
They need energy to repair. That comes from calories. The post workout
calorie burn is MUCH higher than from aerobic exercise. In addition, you're
increasing your LBM (lean body mass), which increases your metabolism.
You'll continue to burn calories at a higher rate on your off days. Muscle
consumes calories in a sedentary state. Fat doesn't.

If you want weight loss, you MUST track everything that passes over your
gums. Fitday.com is a great site for that and it's free.

Have you ever noticed that you see all the fat people on the cardio
equipment, and all the lean people out on the weight floor? Maybe there's a
    reason for that?

Thanks anyhow. Very helpful on the face of it.

  20. You losing about 2% a month.
    Thats very good sustained rate.
If you lose too fast your body may go into
starvation mode and put on weight real
    fast should you stop dieting.
Your skin and muscle tone may be able
shrink at this pace, so you minimize stretch
    marks and sagging skin.
