Well, thanks all of you for next to no help at all.
You have to learn to ignore the trolls. Did you go to Krista's web
site like Dally suggested? If not, the fault is yours.
I did. It was helpful to some degree. I didn't say "NO" help. I said "next
to".
So tell me this:
Is it worthless to do 28 minutes of aerobic excercise every day without
weight training?
Yes and no. All exercise is good, and your cardiovascular system needs
exercise.
But in looking at it from purely a "weight loss" perspective, I think you
are more productive with resistance training ALONG WITH controlling your
diet. From a weight loss perspective, cardio in nothing but a tool to burn
that extra 400 calories that day. If you go home an eat an extra bowl of
cereal for dessert, you've just completely negated the cardio...from a
weight loss perspective. Many people think that if they go to the gym, that
gives them license to eat whatever they want when they get home. Nothing
could be farther from the truth. Weight loss comes down to calories in vs.
calories out. If you eat under your AMR (active metabolic rate), you'll
lose weight. Period.
First, when your run, you burn those ~400 calories to be sure. But, that's
basically it. The next day, if you don't run, you're right back to square
one from a AMR perspective. In other words, your metabolism isn't much
better off.
When you resistance train, you obviously burn calories while lifting. But
your muscles will be busy repairing themselves over the next day or so.
They need energy to repair. That comes from calories. The post workout
calorie burn is MUCH higher than from aerobic exercise. In addition, you're
increasing your LBM (lean body mass), which increases your metabolism.
You'll continue to burn calories at a higher rate on your off days. Muscle
consumes calories in a sedentary state. Fat doesn't.
If you want weight loss, you MUST track everything that passes over your
gums. Fitday.com is a great site for that and it's free.
Have you ever noticed that you see all the fat people on the cardio
equipment, and all the lean people out on the weight floor? Maybe there's a
reason for that?
