Old Atom Freewhweel - cone RH or LH threads?

  1. I thought these were all RH thread, but it's been a long time and this
    one seems awful tight. Were there many freewheels with LH threads on
    the cone ?

    Yes, all of them AFAIK. I dismantled one once as an intellectual
    exercise.

    Incidentally, it did all go back together and still works, although I
    don't use it any more as I don't have a 5 speed bike. I left one of the
    shims out during reassembly, which got rid of most of the wobble.

    Shimano freewheel cones have LH threads. Ditto with freehubs.

    One of my precious Dura-Ace 7-speed freewheels was tight a few weeks back.
    Normally I treat freewheels as throw-aways, but these are special. I
    pulled it apart and added a shim. Good as new.

    Think about it. What would happen if the cone was threaded the other
    way?

    way?

    If it's a RH thread then it tightens against the shims until it can't
    get any tighter. Not bad if it is set up with the correct spacing. If
    it's LH it tends to loosen. Not good. But, results so far seem to
    indicate that LH is normal.

    All freewheels or all ATOMs? Every Shimano and SunTour I've ever
    rebuilt were left-hand thread cones. I'm surprised to hear there are
    exceptions to the *left-hand* rule.

    Everest freewheels, for instance, have a flange in the middle of the body;
    the cogs outboard are threaded RH, those inboard are LH. Normal pedalling
    action tightens both.

    The discussion is not about cogs, but rather about the screw-on
    coverplate that holds the bearings in (really a bearing "cone", but it
    seems odd to call it that).

    I think all coverplates are on the outboard side of the freewheel.
