I thought these were all RH thread, but it's been a long time and this
one seems awful tight. Were there many freewheels with LH threads on
the cone ?

the cone ?Yes, all of them AFAIK. I dismantled one once as an intellectual
exercise.Incidentally, it did all go back together and still works, although I
don't use it any more as I don't have a 5 speed bike. I left one of the
shims out during reassembly, which got rid of most of the wobble. -

One of my precious Dura-Ace 7-speed freewheels was tight a few weeks back.
Normally I treat freewheels as throw-aways, but these are special. I
pulled it apart and added a shim. Good as new. -

All freewheels or all ATOMs? Every Shimano and SunTour I've ever
rebuilt were left-hand thread cones. I'm surprised to hear there are
exceptions to the *left-hand* rule.Mark

action tightens both.The discussion is not about cogs, but rather about the screw-on
coverplate that holds the bearings in (really a bearing "cone", but it
seems odd to call it that).I think all coverplates are on the outboard side of the freewheel.
