Mine is only 16.5km (one way), but on the weekends I go for longer
rides. The ride I was on over the weekend when I had my "series of
unfortunate events" was about 75km.

The most awful aspect of this is people in news:aus.bicycle
posting really interesting looking web links in usenet
when (in a lot of cases) they could have pasted the body... :P

But that's the thing about NNTP. It's not time sensitive, so you can post
to your local spool (or let the newsreader cache it), then let the
computer do the propagation next time it can talk to other NNTP servers.

So he could be reading and posting (albeit with a horrendous latency) just
fine, but unable to access web links. That fits closer to his complaint
than laptop with internet access but no web.

I indeed use Pan, it will download all the message bodies online,
but will also happily go into offline mode for reading on the train.
So in the 5 minutes free I have each morning, I download the
overnight/yesterday's usenet messages, and iff I remember, upload
anything I posted the night before... Nifty Huh.

On the Sydney->Newcastle line, you're lucky to get mobile phone access,
let alone any sort of data connection. Besides, it's stupidly expensive.
