  1. I'm totally having one of those weekends. I have a head cold, my throat hurts,
my sinuses keep clogging, my nose keeps running. I have to be really careful
about what meds I take because I am having surgery on tuesday.

I want my mom to be here and make me a pot of tea and some soft boiled eggs
and bundle me up on the sofa.

I can do all these things but moms do them better.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day, give your mom a break... consider yourself
lucky you still have a mom. Get on the phone right now and send your
mom a big bouquet of flowers... don't you dare call her to whine about
    your widdle sniffles.

I already sent her a present, thank you very much. My sister is up visiting
her right now and they are at lunch, I will call her tomorrow. I'm pretty sure
I don't need some weird guy from the internet telling me how to relate to my
    mother.

he's an endless source of amusement for me. I know that when I read his posts
I will probably laugh out loud and shake my head. They're so...weird! I mean I
can't think of any other way to describe them, just weird. So yeah, when I
tell David about this or that from rfc he knows exactly who I am referring to
when I mention 'that weird guy'.

David was up all night working on some stuff and I think it's time for me to
roust him from bed and make him take care of me (provided I get Sheldon's
approval first, maybe I should prostrate myself before David and thank him for
his bipedalism before I ask him to bundle me up and make me some tea)

So I can buy her flowers and chocolate...

I suppose I could place both items on top of her box of ashes. :-(

    <sigh>

They are in a memory chest here in my bedroom.

    Nearly 4 years now.
It's hard to believe, and I still miss her so.

Best of luck with the surgery! They might pospone it if you are ill.
    Hope you feel better soon!

no, i said I wanted my mom, i didn't say I was calling her or in any way
bothering her. In fact I know she's busy with my sister today so i wouldn't be
    calling her anyway.

I want my mom to be here, sure, but I never said i was going to or even
    intended to call her.

I can do all these things but moms do them better.

In 1976 when my Mother was 82 years old, she went to the hospital for
a cancer operation. I was waiting for her in her room and when she
was wheeled in and after the surgery and she was made comfortable in
her bed, I asked what I could get her, do for her, was there anything
she wanted to make her feel better.

Tears were rolling down her cheeks and she whispered: "I want my
Mother". "Mutti", I said I am here, "Heli (my sister) will be here
soon", but my Mother said "you do not understand, but at a time like
this, only a Mother can make you feel better".

She died in her 95th year in 1988. Happy Mother's Day, Mutti, Heli
    and I miss you.

    Sheldon

    Exactly...

    Sheldon is SO right!

My old stick blender gave out because I was using
it a couple times a day due to recent oral surgery
to remove two troublesome wisdom teeth. After
reading the recent thread on stick blenders,
I bought one of the recommended ones -- the Braun
with the chopper and other accessories. I was
so pleased with it, I bought another one to give
to Mom tomorrow. I don't think she has any teeth
left. I've got all of mine (except three wisdom
teeth), so my dental problems will soon be resolved,
but I learned to appreciate the importance of a
stick blender when you're dentally challenged.

    I briefly considered Sheldon's recommendation
of the Waring immersion blenders, and I bid on
(but did not win) a nice 14" unit on eBay.
But it's a good thing I didn't win it. The
Braun has a 400W motor in a handy compact form
factor, which is pretty much ideal for home use.
It's far more powerful than my old one (another
Braun, 160W, which died because it was damaged
a couple years ago during a house cleaning and
finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago).

This blender can make a smoother puree than
the old one (if that's what's desired -- it
has variable speed control so it's more flexible
than the old one). It can do anything the old
one can do, but way faster. It's a vast
    improvement.

I don't have any use for the whisk accessory,
but I made some pesto with the mini-food
processor that came out quite well. It was
so easy compared to my old method (using a
hand-operated meat grinder), that I expect
to be making pesto more often. My only
complaint is that the pesto tended to run up
the sides of the food processor, but it was
easy to just lift the top off and tamp it
    down every now and then.

It must have been years since I made pesto.
I'm wondering what else I can make with this
    accessory.

I am in my mid 50s now, but the next time I have surgery, I will be

I so understand this, Margaret. In 1998 when my Mother was 84 years old,
she went to the hospital for "exploratory" surgery which revealed
inoperable cancer. She passed away 5 days later in the hospital. During
those intervening days I don't think I've ever seen anyone so frightened,
and regardless of what I said or did, I knew that I could not offer the
comfort her own mother could have provided. When one loses one's mother,
the world is never the same again, regardless of anything else.
