I was recently given a 25 year old steel racer with some nice Campagnolo
'Super Record' components. And I have invested some enthusiasm and a
little money in restoring this vintage bicycle.
Hubs and bearings have never been serviced, but they all still run very
smoothly. So all I have had to do to make it run like it did 25 years
ago, is to put on new chain and 6-cog, new cables and housings, new rims,
spokes and tires. And of course I have painted, polished and waxed to
make it shine and sparkle like it did in 1981.
There is one more repair I would like to make, but I don't know how to go
about it.
The quick releases on both hubs are bent aproximately 1 cm from the end
with the theads - so much that it is very difficult to force them through
the hubs. It would not be a problem to buy new ones, that look much the
same. But since these are the original Campa QRes and since Campagnolo
was founded on the invention of the quick release, I take particular
interest in preserving them.
But how do I straighten them wihtout damaging the threads? Would it be
safe to put on fx. 8 small nuts - four on each side of the bend - and
then press, pull or hammer till they are straight?
Thanks in advance for any help.
