I think it needed an unpleasant video warning, really.

Yes indeed. But it's faked obviously. Take some seconds of traffic jam
and blend it with a huge truck passing solo. Then add some smoke. Some
people do really have a very strange sense of homour.

I hope so. Last time I happened to be at a loose end watching [censored] TV
there was a live police action show which showed them dealing with an
[censored] in a truck who'd just done exactly that, not in a tunnel, and
thought he'd hit the car in front of the one he actually hit, because
the largeish car he'd driven into was so completely subsumed into his van.

I don't know about you but I don't think that's the kind of sudden
decision I can actually rehearse reliably. When presented with it it'll
be a reflex one way or the other, saying you can premeditate it exactly
might be all very well for Vulcans, but I frankly doubt it for Normal
    People.

But back to your man connected to the electrics, you can stand back for
at least a second or two and think (as you've said you wood, looking for
an insulator), and you'd be really very daft not to.

You would find it easier to accept that than Sgt. Miyamoto finds it to
accept that it was the wrong decision to try, because he is dead.

It doesn't look faked to me. Most of the "smoke" appears to be the
contents of the artic coming out of the top as the trailer is wrecked.
The truck that causes the crash comes to a stand in the middle of the
road, as does the car doing an emergency stop behind it. I think it's
real, which means the occupants of the car which ends up between the two
trucks are almost certainly dead, through no fault of their own.

It kind of brings home to you how vulnerable we all are (in any
situation, not just the roads) to the behaviour of other people.

Many of us don't, some of us by choice. It can be argued that the loss
of an adult is worse than the loss of a child.

The issue is not one about which loss is worth more. I guess you would
say the two 14 year olds killed at the Elsenham crossing had parents who
took little care of their children. What would you have done as their
parents? Locked them in their room? Refused to let them go out with
    their friends without you?

That depends - saying "what if it had been a kid" does imply that
somehow we should do more for kids than adults. To a degree this is
true with young children who genuinely aren't old enough to know better,
but around a railway crossing I'd expect those kids to be under their
    parents firm control.

Your mind-reading skills are failing you. I thought no such thing.

Neither. I would however have taught them, many years earlier than 14,
as I was taught, that railway crossings are only safe when used
properly, and that ducking under barriers or crossing when the lights
are telling you not to is extremely stupid and liable to get you killed.
Possibly their parents did this and the information was ignored,
possibly they didn't - at the end of the day you do expect people to
exercise a certain degree of common sense. Nipping across a road
against the lights is a bit risky but can usually be got away with.
Trains are a bit different though.

But TBH one of the main reasons I chose to remain child-free is that I'm
aware of the awesome responsibility that proper parenting entails, and
how it does, when done properly, completely alter your life. The cost
was another factor but deciding I did not want that level of
    responsibility was the main thing.

I won't go into details simply because I have no intention to watch that
disgusting sequence again. So I just note that the steady position and
focus of the camera together with low resultion and repetition rate and
finally constant light conditions make it quite easy for massively
bored security staff to spend their long nights in front of the
monitors with picture by picture manipulation of their observation
    videos.
Also note that the sequence stops immediately after the impact and is
thus not showing the immense amount of smoke and possibly fire as well
as the traffic jam that evolves after such a crash.

Had they been crossing a road at a crossing and been killed there
would have been very much less mass media coverage, even if the
lights were telling the motorist to stop. There would also not have
been a thorough investigation, including publishing data recorder
information from the crossing and vehicle.

A motorist has just been sentenced for killing three people at a
crossing, it got far less mass media coverage

The argument over whether this is genuine or not is , in a sense
pointless. This sort of thing does happen. It's why the criticism in
other newsgroups of "middle lane hoggers" who have the audacity to stay
in the centre lane of a motorway at only 70 mph irritates me. It's
something that i had thought was safe to discuss here, but in the past
    few weeks that has changed.
