Road signs on the A4

This does not apply to cyclists on the road, just masochist cyclists using

A blue rectangular sign has no power in law IIRC, in enforcing cyclists
to dismount.

I think only a bicycle in a red circle would mandate against cycling.

arrangement. It's difficult to see, but are cyclists sharing a
coned-off path with pedestrians during the building work? If so, it
does seem reasonable in this particular instance.

Some cyclists are using a shared use path leading up to this, however it
has been there several weeks, and along with the crane, I suspect it
will be there at least a few more weeks.

Note also the bank of the avon is about six feet to the right of these
signs.

If it's where I think it is then it /is/ temporary, but I think it's
been there for about 18 months now. It was certainly there the last
time I was in that part of Bristol, which would have been last June.

There was a fair amount of discussion about it on the Bristol Cycling
Campaign mailing list a while back, but I can't remember any of it at
present.

From memory, yes (although I should probably wait for Martin to answer
that, since he's been there much more recently).

Quite, although I believe the boarded off area is a designated shared
use path. Personally I prefer to be on the road anyway.

It is on the A4 entering bristol just after passing under the Clifton
Suspension bridge, as you approach the big swing bridge.

That's /incredibly/ poor cycle path design. Any 'facility' designer who
uses those signs has failed.

It's a construction site, FFS. I've never seen adequate pedsestrian
diversions around such temporary hoardings (this one at least has a
ramp); why should cyclists get gold-plated avenues?

Assuming the pavement is a shared use ped/bike way, then it's better
that cyclists dismount and walk alongside the double yellow line than
continue to pedal on the right side of the road against oncoming
traffic. Better still that they should cross the road and cycle with
the traffic on the left, natch, and the sign doesn't preclude that.

There are still plenty of permanent facilities which deserve ridicule,
but the construction co. did the right thing here, IMHO.
