I taught my friend to unispin just yesterday. He got the 180 mount
pretty quickly, probably 8 tries, but when he went to do a unispin, he
messed up badly. I was recording it too. =p
Anyways, at first, I looked right at his feet, as that was the most
noticeable. He want jumping with them, more of just kicking them off
the pedals, instead of actually jumping off the uni. I had him mount,
get in SIF and act like he was gonna do the uni spin, but just had him
jump up, lift the feet high and land on the ground behind the uni, jsut
so he can get used to actually jumping and bringing the feet up.
Now that was done, and I reassured him that he is doing it Seat out to
seat out, he isnt gonna rack himself, he had shinguards on, so pedal
bites arent gonna hurt.
Now he tried them. Since he was comfortable about bringing his feet up,
and not afraid of getting hurt really, his foot position was great, but
now, he wasnt spinning the wheel enough. Probably would spin about
100-120 degrees, causing one foot to land on the pedal, and the other
trying to get over the tire but could, cause the tire was in the way.
I had him look at his hand position. He jumps with his right hand on
the handle, and was spinning the uni to his right. I had him move his
right hand on the top left side of his handle, and just had him spin
it, and get used to spinning it all the way around.
Now that he was able to spin the uni 180 degrees with no problem, and
was able to commit to landing because he want afraid of getting hurt,
and he could get his feet off, he landed his first one in about 10
tries. This whole process took about 5-6mins for him to land a
unispin.
Hopefully that little story has some things you can benefit from.
EDIT: How you mount wont effect this. My friend (in above story)
mounts, then rolls back half a rev to hopping position. He mounts with
his right foot, putting it in the back position, then his hopping
position is right foot in front.
