  1. I got to the ACME supermarket at 4:30pm and the place was practically empty!
I had a clear shot to several cashiers standing around. I was out by 5pm and
    headed home.

I've early morning shopped, where there are NO cashiers and I'm forced to use
    the self check-out machine.

I'm tempted to go back at 4:30pm again tomorrow and check the aisle traffic
to see if it wasn't a fluke.

Another strange, unrelated matter, at the farthest-parking-lot-from-the-mall
ACME supermarket, there's a Starbuck coffee stand inside!?!?! I felt like the
    ACME had been violated. 🙁

Anyway, the best time to shop at your market is?

In my area now, Kentucky as well as Florida where I came from it was about 8
AM to 9 AM. That seems to be when they put out their meats as well as many
on special which go pretty fast. The only place I saw self check out lines
was in North Carolina while there visiting my son and his family. I have
never seen them here or Florida.

Agreed. Early to mid morning, you've got the place to yourself,
except for people stocking the shelves, and to be honest, they aren't
all that fun. They are usually parked right in front of what I need.

It is rather eerie to be in the store when it's that empty.

My Acme has self checkout, too. I use it once in a while, if the
checkout lines look congested, I only have a few items and
none of them have to be weighed.

In Texas and Louisiana, we have "self check out" in stores, such as
    Wal-Mart, Kroger's, K-Mart, HEB, Home Depot.

The busiest shopping day where I live, is Friday.

I like to go to my local Vons at 11:30pm. It's great. Not so many howler
monkeys, the aisles are not blocked by butts wider than a sequoia, the place
doesn;t sound like the inside of an airport with everybody screaming into
cell phones and the stockers are putting all kinds of fresh stuff out. They
also stock the produce aisle at night so I get first pick. Also, the
checkers are nicer, and just more friendly since their shift is almost over.
Makes for a more pleasant experience all around.

Yeah. Three guys shooting the breeze, standing right
in front of the display I wanted to examine.
If they're going to chat, why can't they do it
in a back room or something. This was at a Whole Foods,
who seems to have the worst problem with slacker
    "workers".

    Speaking of which:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/12/business/12foods.html

I'm not a bit surprised. I seldom shop there.
I probably go to Trader Joe's 4-5 times a week.
And it's much further away than Whole Foods, which
I visit maybe once every 1-2 weeks.

Having recently been out of work for a while I got to try out all times. I
find before 9 I get annoyed that things haven't arrived yet and after
lunchtime they start to run out of the best fresh fish, produce and specials
offers. I like to go as close to lunch as possible but before I'm so hungry
    I buy the entire store.

Years ago I used to live in a huge city after work but before 9 pm I'd have
to queue for an hour! Trouble was after 9 p.m. there was never much choice
left. Sometimes, I'd try rushing around in my lunch break but never go back
    to work in time.

Late afternoons busy here in Memphis with shoppers picking up dinner.
Early morning best for parking and shopping but they're just
restocking the meat and putting out the fresh fish, unless a
supervisor is visiting the store. Store workers say that Sunday is the
busiest shopping day now and we're supposed to be the buckle of the
    Bible Belt.

Many supermarkets have Charbucks inside. Why should ACME be any different?

I've seen self-checkouts in pretty much all the supermarkets around here

I agree with your assessment of our area 🙂 It seems a lot of people get
off work around 4PM, rather than 5PM. Traffic is awful and so is that time
of day for grocery shopping. (Remember when stores weren't even open on
Sunday - or at least not until Noon? If you must shop on Sunday do it
    before church lets out!)

    Andy

Now that I work night shifts full time, I get to the market right around
7 am. Not only is it not crowded, but that is when they are putting out
any "deals" etc., such as the Pork outdates for $.97 per lb. I got a
gorgeous package of butterflyed lean pork loins this morning, plus some
    chops and shoulder steaks.

I took 6 lbs. to my Sister and Brother in Law as a gifty. He's on a low
residue diet at the moment due to Diverticulitis, so they can use the
cheap meat. They get a bit tired of chicken too... (And no, I did not
ask for payment! It was a gifty like I said!)

I also get first pick of the re-stocked fresh produce that time of
    morning. :-)

There are generally only 2 cashiers on duty and just enough customers to
keep them busy, but I'm ok with that!

I can get in and out of the store in just under 30 minutes, sticking
pretty much to a shopping list and just checking the sales, and I always
get a good parking space! <g>

They had some lovely Strip Steaks on sale this morning for $5.99 per lb.
The good steaks have been running $7.99 per lb. now for months! I
should'na, but gave in to temptation and blew $24.00 on 5 steaks.

    <sigh>

I already had meat (pork) thawed for the next 2 days so I did freeze
them for later decadent enjoyment.... I may even brave this ugly hot
humid weather (and the mosquitos!) and grill.

Today's meal was a small batch of pressure cooked carrots, celery,
onions and scallions with lemon pepper, garlic powder and a very light
application of Italian herbs. I then sliced up 2 lbs. of pork very thin
and quickly fried it in the skillet after marinating it in Soy sauce,
Oyster sauce, garlic and onion powder and some pureed ginger root. I
also added some toasted sesame seeds to that.

Mixed it all together when all was done.

    Most excellent!

Keeping it on topic, I bought all fresh veggies this morning. White
onions were $.50 per lb.!!! Sweet yellows were $.99. I ignored them. ;-)

And the Zuke's were gorgeous. I'll steam those in a couple of days with
some mushrooms and serve them as a side dish. I get the smallest, most
slender Zuke's I can for maximum tenderness and sweetness. It's cool to
have the produce section all to myself when they are stocking the stuff
    right off the trucks...
