I'll have to check--I have the English version. I seem to recall that it
was translated, and not by Benjo. I also remember there being little or
no bibliography in the English edition, which understandably annoyed
Benjo. I believe I had to order it from Amazon UK.
Steve
I had the privilege of reading one chapter in English, but I don't
remember where I put it. Never mind, I'll look forward to the book! If you
have a link, post it. I've not heard of any English version of We Were All
Gods.
No, there is no English version of We Were All Gods. It has only been
translated into German. However, there is an English translation of two
chapters: the rest day in Cannes, when Bartali seemed to have lost the Tour,
and the stage from Cannes to Briançon, when he almost conquered the yellow
jersey. If anyone is interested, let me know and I sent it to you (but don't
sent to my e-mail adress, for some mysterious reason messages seem to exceed
the quota of my almost empty mailbox).

I'd love to see that. I think I'm going to have to stop being cheap and
buy "Sweat of the Gods," too.
I have Owen Mulholland's "Uphill Battle," which is theoretically a book
about the great climbers of all time, but that necessarily includes most
of the great riders, and he even discovers an excuse to include Wim van
Est, owing to his 250' fall off a mountain.
That book includes a chapter on Bartali and Coppi, which adds the note
that at the end of the 1959 season Bartali (retired from racing and a
team manager) hired Coppi to be his team captain for the next season.
Tragically, Coppi died of malaria before he could start another race.
I don't know if it comes through in all their rivalries, but this
appears to have been a competition between the two that had none of the
outright animosity of, say, Bobet and Gaul ("cheri-pipi"😉. They were
competitors and rivals without being enemies, for the most part.
