I reckon a good measure of leanness is when the missus starts complaining about bony hips after some cuddle time

2. Are all Nashbar wheels freehub/cassette? I need a 700c wheel that I can put a shimano 7-speed freewheel onto.. maybe a new freewheel too, but I have a 7-speed indexed shifter.

With that being a fixie, I'm guess that's a male skeleton...

4. My missus reckoned I looked scrawny when I last got down below 80kgs. She'd want to give the lama a sandwich and watch him eat it.

6. 68.9 after today's ride in the sun. This dropping weight game is easy*

*not. Time to refuel!

... in Mordor.

9. I have a power crank. Just the one. It wasn't forged in Mount Doom. Instead it was forged in the Crack of Doom.

Screw-on cluster?

If the frame has modern 130mm rear wheel spacing, it's probably easier to buy a modern wheel, put an 8sp cassette on it, and just use the top or bottom 7 gears. Either that, or replace one of the cogs with a spacer or spacers.
If you get an old screw-on hub/wheel, you may have to get a new axle and space it out to 130mm.

Do old clusters screw on to new fixie wheels properly? I dunno

11. Try ebay, you'll find heaps of 700c 7 speed wheels there

Yes. Originally the fixed cog that screwed onto a hub could be replaced with the single speed ratchet arrangement which eventually grew into 3,4, 5 etc speed screw-on clusters. That's how the set-up evolved.... until it was completely replaced with the cassette. I've done some conversions from 27" 'racing bikes' to single-speed townies by just replacing the clusters with a single gear and re-dishing the wheel. The thread hasn't changed in all that time, so even a brand-new track wheel (or flip-flop hub) will take a multi-speed cluster. Not sure how the axle will go though.

13. Ah, right. Is there enough thread on a track/fixie hub to support a 7-cog screw-on? I suppose a lot of the load is taken by the axles bearings and cones, right? I haven't thought it through :-).

I've got a 7sp Sachs cluster here, and the cavity in the back, including the threads and everything, right to the back 'ring' behind largest cog, is about 11mm.

14. Should be able to. I know guys who have taken track disc wheels and used them on the road for TTs by screwing on a chunky old cluster.

15. I've got a few old rear wheels with a screw on block - mostly 7 speed Maillard jobbies. I won't sell them on principle as it'd be some f**khead fixie emo c**t that'd end up riding my old bombproof Campag omega v's on chorus hubs. If some hipster knocked on my door and ended up trying to talk me down on the price I could see thinking about skewering his eyes onto the shiny old school Campag quick releases. Avoiding jail time is worth letting the wheels collect dust.

Just leave the fixed gear on and ride it like a man. Boardman did it when he did his 45 minute 40km record ride. Gotta wonder what he would have done with fun items like an aero frame or even a helmet that didn't resemble a child's potty ( standard Vetta road helmet) There's a weekly 10 mile TT not to far from here that's pan flat. There might be a 1 meter elevation gain from the start to the far turn.. Would be idle for a fixed gear on a nice night.

17. cs124 said something like that when dad was considering selling his Kenevans. He said he'd rather cop grief off his missus for buying it rather than have some [censored] hipster buy it and ruin it.

HA.

so, you wouldn't let any of these guys soil your old Campag? Ha.
Fair enough.
