We're not taking a photography class to figure out which f stop works best for my sprint and which filter brings out the highlights of my Wilier's paint. Ever since P@S / PHD cameras came out, my Minolta and Nikon SLR's have stayed in their cases. Matter of fact, since cell phones got half-assed camera's built in, my P@S Olympus has pretty much been left for dead.

I bought my wife a cheapy smart phone, but you can't see the LCD screen in the day time to see what you're taking a picture of. Verizon and all the rest of the cell phone companies no longer subsidize the cost of the phones, so if you want a decent phone, you have to pay $600+. I opted not to do so because I didn't know how my wife would respond to a smart phone since she is computer illiterate. She has done real well so I might be getting her a better phone in a year or two. Me, I have a prepaid phone with a crummy camera. Heck, I don't even turn on my phone. It's on the bike for emergencies, only.

That is the only straight section of GMR. Gina was right behind me so glad it didn't get in her spokes. Also glad I was not in a switchback or it might have gone over the edge!

I see Walmart is selling the Go Pro now.

It's a requirement for joining. Muttering French nonsense phrases will help you advance rapidly in the ranks.

How about" oui, oui, oui, all the way home"? Will that work?

I haven't ridden today as I have a cold, and am struggling to breath - so when exercising I can't catch my breath properly. I will admit that it is annoying me a little bit, because I need to be able to ride as I love it, and I miss it. I usually ride to wherever I need to go that day, but have been unable to do so for the past few days - so here's hoping that I will be able to put it right before the end of the week!

Don't worry, you will be back before you know it.

  5. Summer like weather here so I rode naked.... that is not entirely accurate. It is actually more like Spring weather. Looks good for a repeat tomorrow through Saturday. "Somebody stop me"!

  6. 24 Miles of 70 degree fun this afternoon. At least it was when I started riding. It was below 60 degrees when I wrapped it up. A little better than 900' of climbing. Hit 44 MPH coming off Amish School Hill and 43 MPH flying down the S-Turns in a Peter Sagan tuck off the next downhill. Hey...I got the Sagan hair thing going right now (no...not the half-shaved noggin!) so I might as well polish the top tube with my junk.

In short sleeves again, but I still ain't shed the tights just yet. Guns were shaved all winter, but I read some Eyetalyun training book over 40 years ago the said to keep the tights on and the knees warm until it was at least 70 degrees. Close...ever so close.

Fingerless gloves this afternoon! How I have missed those!

Also rode through a bunch of gnats! Spring can not be far off and with the mild Winter we should have record numbers of insects flying around this Summer.

Tomorrow? JH, I'm afraid the 80% chance of .84" of rain (where to they get off? predicting rainfall to the nearest hundredth of an inch??? ppppffffttttt!) is going to put me back on the trainer.

And my friend in the hospital has been diagnosed with C-DIF! I never heard of it, but apparently it was caused by the antibiotics he was on and the fact that every hospital and nursing home in the country is full of the damned spores waiting to infect...wait for it...sick people. He is contagious and all visitors are required to gown-up and do the mask thing. Er...I'll wait another day or two and see if they can get him upgraded to only Zikka Virus deadly or some such [censored].

  8. Yesterday during the ride, my randonneur buddies told me about a bad bicycle crash in NC near Chapel Hill, NC. It seems a motorist told the police she was coming up a hill and didn't see 4 riders in single file and realized there was another car coming up the hill, panicked and made a choice to hit the cyclists, instead. Witnesses say the female driver passed on a hill, and that's why she didn't see the cyclists. Here is the story. These 4 riders were doing a 200k, and are very accomplished randonneur riders. A few may never ride again because of this woman, who has a record a yard long. The first story is written by a local news agency. The next link is from a blog of other riders and lawyers, who have done some investigating of their own by interviewing witnesses and the police as to what actually happened.

These folks need our prayers. I hope and pray they can get back to normal.

  9. 13 miles 2,024 ft of gain in the dirt. Wednesday Evening ride on the MTB. 2 loops at Claremont Hills Wilderness Park.

Experimenting with the set up of my MTB. Fork feels nice at 120 psi compared to the 180 rec'd by the MRG'r. Front tire feels nice at 35 psi but the rear felt squirmy at 40 psi. Think I will try 50 next time. Image in Did You Ride Today? But overall much better control than before.

  10. Bicycleman, Weatherby and I had discussed the crash that injured the four cyclists in the "Is Road Cycling Safe?" thread. I cross-posted your link and updated information to that thread (in this same sub-forum).

A disgusting crash that did NOT have to happen. Prayers for recovery for the cyclists.

Beautiful! Good job getting 1000' in only 5 miles! I'll bet that's a fun climb on dirt. Ouch!

I appreciate that. I had forgotten about the other thread asking whether cycling was dangerous. Jhuskey, go ahead and move my post about the accident to the dangerous road cycling thread.

Hope you don't try to sell your saddle.

  14. Alright alright! I'll go for -a ride-, Jeez...

I'll get drunk later. It's all sunny and breezy and the bike is all clicky and it puuurrs... 😄

Maybe I'll take a picture from my giant Samsung phone and post it here later! One without an orthopedic collar in a hospital room...

    Jeez... 😄

  15. Wouldn't it be nice if somebody invented a phone that was small and compact that you could carry in your seat bag.

I always wear them completely out. As far as phones I am thinking they have reached maximum size and will now start shrinking to create a new market. We as consumers are like Lemmings.

    1. Go to (insert name of craptastic local chain store here).
    2. Buy $4.99 TRAC Phone.
    3. Profit?

They still sell small flip phones and small non-flip phones. Perfect for emergency use and if they get trashed...who cares? I carry one in a plastic bag and the iPotato camera might make Volnix scream or horror, but it beats the Hell out of the Kodak trash I grew up with.

Good. I don't have to spend a dime. [censored] like the Garmin 1000 and iPotato's the size of a brick were always too large for me and the bike.

Suddenly, I feel...ever so fashionable! I must be a trendsetter!

I already have a prepaid phone with keyboard so I can text, Samsung Intensity. I can do anything with it, but it's not a smart phone. I pay $30 every 3 months. I tried to get a smart phone with that same plan, but no dice. they want you to pay $30 a month. Smart phones are nice, but cell phone coverage out where I live is so bad, I seldom use the phone. I don't even turn on the one I've got, unless I go into town, and that's so the little woman can cal to tell me to buy something extra.

  20. Yesterday we hit a high temperature record in NY.It reached 80 degrees!!!I couldn't make it outside due to my work schedule, but it was still 60 degrees at 6 am this morning. I finally bought a new wheel set, the Mavic Kysrium Elites. I rode an 18.2 mile internal session at a 17.6 mph average pace. The wheels seem to speed up during starts quicker than the previous r500, handle better and are somewhat lighter. Early morning rides are pleasant and the roads have virtually no traffic. I may try again tomorrow morning if the weather is decent.
