Whats the point of pushing yourself into zone 4 if its not actually making you more efficient at lower intensities? Ive seen plenty of riders who swear by high-intensity interval training, but when it comes down to it, can they actually sustain a decent pace on a long, steady-state ride in zone 2?
Im not talking about some casual Sunday spin here, Im talking about a real ride with some serious mileage and elevation gain. If youre only training in zone 4, are you really building the endurance and aerobic capacity you need to be efficient at lower intensities? Or are you just burning out your legs and wasting your time?
Ive seen some studies that suggest high-intensity training can actually improve efficiency at lower intensities by increasing mitochondrial density and improving muscle fiber recruitment patterns. But Ive also seen plenty of riders who train exclusively in zone 4 and still cant seem to sustain a decent pace on a long ride.
So whats the deal? Is zone 4 training actually making you more efficient at lower intensities, or is it just a bunch of hype? Are there any actual studies or data out there that can back up the claim that zone 4 training improves efficiency in zone 2? Or is this just another myth perpetuated by the cycling community?
I want to see some real data and science behind this claim, not just anecdotal evidence from some guy who claims to have improved his FTP by 20 watts after doing a few high-intensity interval workouts. I want to know if zone 4 training actually translates to real-world efficiency gains on long, steady-state rides.
