Does zone 4 training increase efficiency in zone 2 rides

  1. Whats the point of pushing yourself into zone 4 if its not actually making you more efficient at lower intensities? Ive seen plenty of riders who swear by high-intensity interval training, but when it comes down to it, can they actually sustain a decent pace on a long, steady-state ride in zone 2?

    Im not talking about some casual Sunday spin here, Im talking about a real ride with some serious mileage and elevation gain. If youre only training in zone 4, are you really building the endurance and aerobic capacity you need to be efficient at lower intensities? Or are you just burning out your legs and wasting your time?

    Ive seen some studies that suggest high-intensity training can actually improve efficiency at lower intensities by increasing mitochondrial density and improving muscle fiber recruitment patterns. But Ive also seen plenty of riders who train exclusively in zone 4 and still cant seem to sustain a decent pace on a long ride.
