What are the best ways to improve my climbing abilities for hilly races?

  1. Whats the point of all these training plans and periodization nonsense when it comes to improving climbing abilities for hilly races? It seems like every Tom, [censored], and Harry on this forum is spewing out the same regurgitated advice about building a base fitness level and increasing intensity without providing any actual evidence to back it up.

    If I want to really improve my climbing, shouldnt I just focus on raw power output and ignore all the fluff about technique and cadence? And whats with the obsession with weight training? Do people really think that a few hours of lifting weights is going to magically improve their climbing abilities?

    And dont even get me started on the so-called experts who claim that you need to spend years building up your endurance before you can even think about tackling hilly races. What a load of nonsense. If Im already capable of sustaining a reasonable pace on the flats, why cant I just focus on developing the specific skills and strength needed for climbing?
