  1. I'm looking for an ice cream scooper for rock-hard
homemade ice cream. Has anyone used this one?
    Reommendations on any others?

I bought a very inexpensive metal bowled one with a clunky
plastic handle that likely works near as good as that $18
one, and all I do is run the bowl of it under the hottest
tap water between scoop-outs. Works quite well, methinks.

I got a fancy new teflon coated one last year... it's about
    the same price as yours.

Recently, my ice cream scoop broke. I mean broke, the
metal just snapped off right below the scoop. Obviously a
bad casting, but after six years or whatever, I got my
money's worth. I went to a commercial supply place and
that scoop slipped a gear quickly and now the little blade
that swipes out the ice cream is out of the scoop's bowl.
    Off to buy another.

I bought one of the new fangled types that looks kind of
like a pair of pliers in the shape of an ice cream scoop.
You squeeze the handles together and the bowl pieces mate
into a half sphere. When you have your ice cream scooped,
you relax your grip and the scoop separates into two parts
and the ice cream just drops out. I was skeptical, but the
thing works. I bought mine at a local store, but I think I
remember seeing one in the Home Market Place catalog. I'm
remembering something like $6.95. It's a little too new-
fangled looking for my taste. (Ice cream is a comfort food
and the scoop is part of the experience.) But in this case,
I'm letting form follow function and would get another, it
works well and looks super sturdy.

By the way, my favorite scoop is the oak handled one that I
used growing up and is still used by my mother to this day.
I'm guessing that oak handles no longer meet food safety
codes because I've tried and tried to find a new one and I'm
    told they're no longer made.

    Hope this helps,

    Ken

I have an OXO scoop, metal with a rubber handle, the scoop
is cut striaght on the end. Excellent for cutting through
homemade ice cream. In HS I scooped ice cream in the
summers, the only stay away at any cost info I can give on a
scoop is the ones with the blade that runs across the bowl,
cut hands when ice cream is really hard.

    All of $5.99

Mines been going strong for at least three years.

  6. Goodness I haven't seen one of those, but my mom had a
wooden paddle that she used for making bread, she also used
it as a disciplinary tool on her 4 unruly children. When she
died and we were going through her stuff none of the kids
wanted it, although I was tempted to burn the thing in the
    fireplace.

Oh ya, i did get her ice cream scoop. It is a great metal
one with liquid inside! A little warm water on it and its
ready to scoop out rock hard ice cream. Not good for
scooping cookie dough though. The bowl of the scoop is sort
    of undulated.

    take care Liz

I have one of these; I found it at the grocery store. It
claims to go through the hardest ice cream. However, I find
that keeping it squeezed closed *and* trying to cut through
hard ice cream simultaneously hurts. For softer ice cream
it's great. That's why I was looking for another solution.

I actually broke two of these on hard ice cream. I'll stick
with my Zeroll, nearly 40 years old.

I remember a few years back a pastry chef I knew had an
interesting ice cream scooper @ the restaurant where he
worked. Hard ice cream which they made homemade came out
like a easter egg shape which look nice on top of desserts
using phyllo dough. I don't remember where online they
ordered from but think it ran around $20.00. Got to get one
    for myself.

  12. I bought and returned one like that..stinks for a disabled
person ( hand dexterity issues here..among other things..MS)
. I hate to mention this but someone told me the<whisper>
pampered chef ice scream scoop is a dream. No experience
her, but it supposedly glides right threw thru ice cream.
Same lady turned me on to the pizza cutter from them and
that it is the best pizza cutter I have ever tried..like a
    real knife, on a wheel!

  13. I use the good grip ice cream scoop. It slices right through
ice cream and has maintained well...I guess most of my
appliences are from there...part of my wedding registry...
