    Proinflammatory cytokines increase iron uptake into human
    monocytes and synovial fibroblasts from patients with
    rheumatoid arthritis.

    Background: It has been hypothesized that iron is stored in
    the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis which
    perpetuates inflammation by aiding the production of oxygen
    free radicals. Proinflammatory cytokines are produced by
    macrophages and lymphocytes present within synovium and by
    mononuclear cells of in synovial fluid from patients with
    rheumatoid arthritis. There are two known systems for iron
    uptake. The first involves binding of iron to transferrin
    and uptake via transferrin receptors. The second involves
    uptake by low molecular weight organic anions such as
    ascorbate and citrate (non-transferrin bound uptake).
    Material/Methods: Proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1, Il-6,
    TNF? and interferon ?) were added to fibroblasts isolated
    from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and human monocytes
    in culture and their effect on 59Fe-transferrin and citrate
    uptake was determined. Results: Proinflammatory cytokines
    increase transferrin and non-transferrin bound iron uptake
    into human monocytes and increase transferrin-bound iron
    uptake by synovial fibroblasts, but have no effect on non-
    transferrin bound uptake into fibroblasts. Conclusions:
    Proinflammatory cytokines produced in human rheumatoid
    arthritis synovium and synovial fluid may contribute to the
    accumulation of iron that occurs in rheumatoid arthritis
    synovium which may lead to damage to synovial fibroblasts,
    macrophages and lymphocytes.

  2. I'm glad you posted this, it confirms one example that is a
    weakness with most of the iron abstracts. In this cas
    inflamation promotes iron uptake and iron was not the cause
    of the underlying disorder. In this example iron is an
    effect not a cause. This question needs to be asked about
    all studies where one is found in association with another
    thing. Thanks.

    I wonder if we're doing the right thing by pointing out the
    error of his ways to him. Maybe we'd be better off having a
    word with God, and asking him to put him right, as he thinks
    he's on a divine mission anyway.

  6. This abstract is a good example where iron is a result of an
    underlying condition that causes increased stores of it. It
    is an important example because it shows that we must divide
    out what is cause from what is effect where two things
    appear togather. Thanks for the example.

    Yes a very important point, iron is being contributed to
    current stores by addition, and it is happening because of
    something else; iron is not causing the disease but the
    disease causes the amount of iron.

    "Contribute" is a verb "Additive" is a noun.

    They are different.
