Drilling holes in Alex DX32 rims?.... Interesting,,,, there are 2 different bicycles pictured on that site with the same rim configuration. I can only guess what might pass through the thoughts of someone drilling them. The spoke bead looks nice and thick. Weight saving. The wide rim needed to support a broad tyre at low pressure is wider (and therefore heavier) than necessary for strength, so unwanted metal is drilled out from between the spokes.

My brother did the same on his road bike..Mavic something-or- others, back in the day. He used those rims only in hill- climbing events in the Alps. That way you'd eliminate the problem of having to actually look for the valve, and maybe even rotate your wheel before you could pump up your tire. I was hoping to use 18 schraders alternting with 18 prestas so any pump would work too...but it was too much work and I never managed to accumulate enough screw-on valve stems...

Wouldn't use of rim tape be mandatory with such rims? I notice none was used in the first picture. (The second I'm not so sure about).

I, too, remember them on Mongoose BMX bikes. IIRC, they were drilled Araya 7X rims with a special high-strength rim strip. The rim strip had a metallic coating that came in several colors so the user could customize the bike without buying new rims.

This is sort of the antithesis of your experience and preferences with regard to durability Chris. Some people are very conscious of the weight of their bike. I mean, drilling your rims out??? You could lighten your monospoke wheel with a bandsaw and get rid of a lot of excess metal.

You could use 12 each of Schrader, Presta, and Woods valves. Or 9 each of the same plus 9 quick-connect air hose chucks.

It depends on the tube and pressure used. Snowbike tires are often run at 5 psi with 2-3mm thick downhill or motocross tubes, in which case rim tape might well be unnecessary. Of course the rim holes would have to be well chamfered lest they chafe the tube.

Oh the rings are probably fine, no stress there. My brother drilled the arms out! Like, 4 lovely 1/2" holes from top to bottom. Actually, they never did break, but I dunno...seems risky to me!! ;-)
