  1. I'm asking this question in the hope that I am not accused of stirring the

Is there a way of preventing cancer? Please don't give me
any [censored] for asking this question please. It's just that we
talk so much of destroying the cancer that is there as
opposed to preventing it! I'm all for destroying it as well
    with drugs and other forms!

I think sometimes it just happens, that's why it's important
to go for recommended screenings and report anything new to
your doctor. J Here's some Prevention links (tips) you can

  3. Depends upon the type of cancer. There are well-known ways
reduce the risk of lung cancer, colon cancer. But there are
many others for which there doesn't seem to be any known way
to do the same (brain, leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, etc.).

It's not a bad question. The problem is, it's not just one
question, but it's many questions, one for each cancer.
Cancer is not just a single disease. For instance, there are
well-characterized ways to decrease the risk of colon cancer
and, of course, lung cancer. However, there are many other
cancers for which such strategies either don't exist or
haven't been discovered yet. Whether you realize it or not,
what you ask is an exceedingly complex question that can
only be answered for a few cancers and for which, in the
majority of cancers, the answer is not known.

Preventing? No Reducing significantly the risk? Yes. Don't
smoke, don't get fat, don't get old.

I could be wrong, but wouldn't good old advice apply. Eat
well and in moderation. In more detail might be to avoid
toxins and try to limit exposure to free radicals (caused by
various eating habits, such as excess quantities of some
types of lipids). Perhaps take precautions to neutralize
free radicals (a controversial area to be sure, but
supposedly this is the realm of antioxidants ... some of
which are rumorred to protect cancer cells as well).

Such steps may help, of course, but there can be no
guarantee that if one does this he will be cancer-free.

Cancer is a very complex group of diseases -- we have
learned much, but we have far to go.
